Foreign proteins are produced by introducing synthetic constructs into host bacteria for biotechnology applications. This process can cause resource competition between synthetic circuits and host cells, placing a metabolic burden on the host cells which may result in load stress and detrimental physiological changes. Consequently, the host bacteria can experience slow growth, and the synthetic system may suffer from suboptimal function. To help in the detection of bacterial load stress, we developed machine-learning strategies to select a minimal number of genes that could serve as biomarkers for the design of load stress reporters. We identified pairs of biomarkers that showed discriminative capacity to detect the load stress states induced in 41 engineered Escherichia coli strains.

The present paper investigates the possibility of replacing the traditional L-type corner joint used in chair construction with a 3D printed connector, manufactured using the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) method and black PLA as filament. The connector was designed to assemble the legs with seat rails and stretchers, and it was tested under diagonal tensile and compression loads. Its performance was compared to that of the traditional mortise-and-tenon joint.

Mechanical stress is one of the factors influencing the initiation of pitting corrosion and deterioration of the protective properties of the passive layer on stainless steel. The tests carried out on AISI 304L stainless steel showed that, in the 3.5% NaCl environment for samples loaded in the elastic and plastic range, no pitting corrosion initiation was observed.

The bending stiffness of beams represents a pivotal parameter influencing both the dimensions of the elements during their design and their subsequent utilisation. It is evident that excessive deflections can cause discomfort to users and contribute to further structural degradation. The objective of this study was to enhance the bending stiffness of timber beams by bonding a composite sheet to their external surfaces.

In recent years, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been increasingly applied in shield tunnel engineering. However, most research on SFRC segments focuses on the load-bearing capacity, while the tunnel deformation is an equally critical indicator that decides if the tunnel can operate safely during service conditions. Therefore, it is essential to also study the stiffness variations in SFRC segments, which is closely connected to the serviceability limit state (SLS).

With the advent of bioceramic sealers, sealers have become a more important filling material for endodontic treatment. When a solid sealer, rather than an elastic gutta-percha, occupies a significant portion of the root canal, it is unclear whether the tooth structure will be strengthened to withstand stress or whether the increased stiffness will transmit the load directly to the entire root, potentially causing root fracture. This study compared the fracture resistance and fracture patterns of roots filled with various root canal sealers, including bioceramic sealers, and each corresponding filling technique.
