Background: Testosterone (T) is an anabolic hormone crucial to the structure and function of skeletal muscle. Testosterone is partially synthesized from cholesterol, but little is known about the relationship of cholesterol intake and serum cholesterol with T levels.

Aim: To investigate whether cholesterol intake and serum total cholesterol (TC) levels are associated with serum total testosterone (TT) levels in men.

Methods: A cross-sectional study enrolling 1996 men aged 20 to 80 years from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014 was carried out. Diet assessment was performed using two 24-h food recalls, and TT levels were measured by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Regression analyses were performed to evaluate whether TT was associated with cholesterol intake and serum TC levels.

Results: Neither cholesterol intake nor serum TC levels were associated with TT levels in unadjusted and adjusted analyses (adjustment for energy, total fat and alcohol intake, smoking, age, physical activity, family income, marital status, race, educational level, diabetes, hypertension, and body mass index).

Conclusion: Dietary cholesterol intake and TC levels are not associated with TT levels in men from the USA.

Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Red and Larch Pine Needle Powders on Productivity, Egg Quality, Yolk Fatty Acids and Cholesterol and Hatchability of Laying Quails.

J Anim Physiol Anim Nutr (Berl)

January 2025

Faculty of Agriculture Department of Animal Science, Sehit Bülent Yurtseven Kampüsü, Igdır University, Igdir, Turkey.

This study aimed to determine the efficacy of red pine and larch pine needles powder at different doses on productive performance, egg quality, hatching parameters, total fatty acid and cholesterol levels of laying quails. A total of 126 (84 ♀ and 42 ♂) 20-week-old laying quail were randomly distributed into seven experimental diets with three replicates of six (four female and two male) birds per cage. The groups were fed a basal diet (CON group), a basal diet with red pine needle powder (RPNP group) (1.

Association between Mediterranean diet and metabolic health status among adults was not mediated through serum adropin levels.

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Department of Community Nutrition, School of Nutrition and Food Science, Nutrition and Food Security Research Center, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, PO Box 81745-151, Isfahan, Iran.

Background: Prevalence of metabolic disorders has been increased in recent years around the world. The relationship between Mediterranean diet (MD) with metabolic health status and serum adropin levels has been less examined in Iranian adults. We investigated the association between MD compliance with metabolic health status and adropin hormone in Iranian adults.

As the extension of the egg-laying cycle, heightened energy and lipid metabolism cause excessive lipid accumulation, resulting in rapid decline in laying performance during the late laying period. Bile acids (BAs), synthesized from cholesterol in the liver, are potent metabolic and immune signaling molecules involved in lipid metabolism and the regulation of energy homeostasis. However, under different dietary protein levels, the role of BAs on hepatic lipid metabolism of laying hens at the late phase remains unclear.

: carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) have gained attention to address metabolic dysregulation commonly observed in dyslipidemia, a condition posing significant risks to cardiovascular health. However, the effectiveness of CRDs in improving cardiovascular health remains contentious. This meta-analysis comprehensively evaluated the long-term effects of CRDs on glucolipid metabolism and weight loss in individuals with dyslipidemia.

Intestinal epithelial cell NCoR deficiency ameliorates obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Acta Pharm Sin B

Nuclear receptor corepressor (NCoR1) interacts with various nuclear receptors and regulates the anabolism and catabolism of lipids. An imbalance in lipid/energy homeostasis is also an important factor in obesity and metabolic syndrome development. In this study, we found that the deletion of NCoR1 in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) mainly activated the nuclear receptor PPAR and attenuated metabolic syndrome by stimulating thermogenesis.
