2,5-Dihydroxymethylfuran and furfuryl alcohol serve as versatile building-blocks in pharmaceuticals, polymers, and value-added intermediates. To develop an efficient and sustainable method for their production from biomass, a combined approach using deep eutectic solvent Citric acid:Betaine (CTA:BT) for bagasse catalysis and recombinant E. coli SCFD23 for bioreduction of bagasse-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural was devised. Bagasse was effectively transformed into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (48 mM) and furfural (14 mM) in CTA:BT (8 wt%)-water at 170 °C for 30 min. Bioreduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural by SCFD23 cell co-expressing formate dehydrogenase and NAD(P)H-dependent aldehyde reductase (SsCR) yielded 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (90.0 % yield) and furfuryl alcohol (99.0 % yield) in 6 h, using biomass-derived formic acid, xylose and glucose as co-substrates. Molecular docking confirmed the stable binding and reductase activity of SsCR with the biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural. An efficient and eco-friendly chemobiological approach was applied for co-production of 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran and furfuryl alcohol from biomass in one-pot two-step reaction.

One strategy for adding unique characteristics and flavors to improve coffee quality is the selection of starter microorganisms. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effect of LNFCA11 and B10 as starter cultures on the quality of four different wet-fermented coffee varieties. Microbiological, molecular, and chemical analyses were carried out to identify yeast, bacteria, volatile compounds, carbohydrates and bioactive compounds in coffee.

Despite their potential risks to human health and the environment at ng/L to μg/L concentrations, there has been relatively little effort to measure trace organic compounds (TOrCs) in surface waters of Central America. The concentrations of eighteen TOrCs detected at eleven surface water sites in the Lempa River basin of El Salvador and four sources of drinking water for the cities of San Salvador, Antiguo Cuscatlán, Soyapango, and Santa Tecla are reported here. All samples were analyzed via liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Converting biomass-derived molecules like 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into value-added products alongside hydrogen production using renewable energy offers significant opportunities for sustainable chemical and energy production. Yet, HMF electrooxidation requires strong alkaline conditions and membranes for efficient conversion. These harsh conditions destabilize HMF, leading to humin formation and reduced product purity, meanwhile membranes increase costs.

A tetragonal zirconia-faujasitic SAPO-37 zeolite composite (SAP-37ZR) was synergistically stabilised at 550 °C using a temperature programmed reduction method. The presence of the zeolite-ZrO composite phase was confirmed through powder XRD reflection, SEM and TEM-ED pattern analyses. The developed SAP-37ZR composite, exhibiting moderate acidity, was found to be highly active for the production of ethyl levulinate (EL) from furfuryl alcohol with a 99% yield.

Effect of Pd/Cu(Co) ratio on catalytic performance of PdCu(Co)/NC bimetallic catalysts for furfural selective hydrogenation.

PdCu/NC and PdCo/NC with different metal mass ratios of Pd to Cu (or Co) are synthesized. They (Pd : Cu (or Co) = 3 : 7) show excellent catalytic activity and high selectivity to furfuryl alcohol (FA) (or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA)) under quite mild conditions due to synergistic effect of Pd-Cu (Co)-NC.
