AbstractGenetic variation within species is crucial for sessile species to adapt to novel environments when facing dramatic climate changes. However, the debate continues whether standing ancestral variation adaptive to current environmental variability is sufficient to guarantee future suitability. Using wild banana , we investigated the relative contribution of standing ancestral variation versus new mutations to environmental adaptation and inferred their future fate. On the continental island of Taiwan, local populations immigrated from the Southeast Asian continent during the ice age and have been isolated since then. This allows the classification of genetic variants into standing ancestral variation (polymorphic in Taiwan and the continent) and new mutations (polymorphic only in Taiwan). For temperature-related variables where Taiwan is mainly within the ancestral climatic range, standing ancestral variation had a slightly stronger association than new mutations. New mutations were more important for precipitation-related variables, where northeastern Taiwan had much more winter rainfall than most of continental Southeast Asia. Upon future climate change, new mutations showed higher genetic offset in regions of abrupt transition between allele frequency and local environments, suggesting their greater spatial heterogeneity of future vulnerability.

The strong correlation between reproductive life cycle type and chromosome numbers in green plants has been a long-standing mystery in evolutionary biology. Within green plants, the derived condition of heterosporous reproduction has emerged from the ancestral condition of homospory in disparate locations on the phylogenetic tree at least 11 times, of which three lineages are extant. In all green plant lineages where heterospory has emerged, there has been a significant downsizing in chromosome numbers.

The transition to flying insects: lessons from evo-devo and fossils.

Curr Opin Insect Sci

January 2025

Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Charles University, Viničná 7, CZ-128 00 Praha, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

Insects are the only arthropod group to achieve powered flight, which facilitated their explosive radiation on land. It remains a significant challenge to understand the evolutionary transition from nonflying (apterygote) to flying (pterygote) insects due to the large gap in the fossil record. Under such a situation, ontogenic information has historically been used to compensate for fossil evidence.

Colonization and diversification processes are responsible for the distinctiveness of island biotas, with Madagascar standing out as abiodiversity hotspot exceptionally rich in species and endemism. Regardless of its significance, the evolutionary history and diversification drivers of Madagascar's flora remain understudied. Here we focus on Helichrysum (Compositae, Gnaphalieae) to investigate the evolutionary and biogeographic origins of the Malagasy flora.

Gone with the Species: From Gene Loss to Gene Extinction.

Front Biosci (Schol Ed)

December 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Virtual University of Pakistan, 55150 Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.

Background: Vertebrae protein-coding genes exhibit remarkable diversity and are organized into many gene families. These gene families have emerged through various gene duplication events, the most prominent being the two rounds of whole-genome duplication (WGD). The current research project analyzed a unique class of genes called "singletons".

Novel and repurposed antiviral drugs are available for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, antiviral combinations may be more potent and lead to faster viral clearance, but the methods for screening antiviral combinations against respiratory viruses are not well established and labor-intensive. Here, we describe a time-efficient (72-96 h) and simple drug-sensitivity assay for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using standard 96-well plates.
