Nanocomposites are constructed from a matrix material combined with dispersed nanosized filler particles. Such a combination yields a powerful ability to tailor the desired mechanical, optical, electrical, thermodynamic, and antimicrobial material properties. Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (SCNCs) are exciting potential fillers, as they display size-, shape-, and composition-controlled properties and are easily embedded in diverse matrices. Here we present their role as quantum photoinitiators (QPIs) in acrylate-based polymer, where they act as a catalytic radical initiator and endow the system with mechanical, photocatalytic, and antimicrobial properties. By utilizing ZnO nanorods (NRs) as QPIs, we were able to increase the tensile strength and elongation at break of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels by up to 85%, unlike the use of the same ZnO NRs acting merely as fillers. Simultaneously, we endowed the PEGDA hydrogels with post-polymerization photocatalytic and antimicrobial activities and showed their ability to decompose methylene blue and significantly eradicate antibiotic-resistant bacteria and viral pathogens. Moreover, we demonstrate two fabrication showcase methods, traditional molding and digital light processing printing, that can yield hydrogels with complex architectures. These results position SCNC-based systems as promising candidates to act as all-in-one photoinitiators and fillers in nanocomposites for diverse biomedical applications, where specific and purpose-oriented characteristics are required.

Lignin, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, is emerging as a mainstay of the upcoming revolution in sustainable materials processing. Despite the inherent challenges associated with the heterogeneous structure of lignin, significant progress has recently been made in developing innovative strategies to valorize this fascinating aromatic biopolymer to deliver industry-demanded products via photoreactions. The purpose of this concept article is to unravel insights into these creative approaches in lignin-assisted photoreactions, focusing on photopolymerization to construct functional polymeric materials and photoreduction to provide valuable chemicals, wherein lignin serves as a macromolecular photoinitiator and a reductive photocatalyst, respectively.

Perovskite as an emerging semiconductor luminescent material has attracted widespread attention due to its simple preparation, high luminescence quantum yield, high color purity, tunable spectrum, and ability to cover the entire visible light band. However, due to the influence of water or other highly polar solvents, oxygen, temperature, and radiation, perovskite nanocrystals will aggregate or collapse in the lattice, eventually leading to luminescence quenching. This study starts from the postprocessing of perovskite, uses methyl methacrylate as the monomer and TPO as the photoinitiator, and encapsulates the perovskite powder prepared by the hot injection method through ultraviolet light initiation.

The clinical application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited by oxygen-dependence and side effects caused by photosensitizer residues. Photoinitiators based on the H-abstraction reaction can address these challenges because they can generate alkyl radical-killing cells independently of oxygen and undergo rapid bleaching following H-abstraction. Nonetheless, the development of photoinitiators for PDT has been impeded by the absence of effective design strategies.
