A simple, rapid chemical coating and patterning method was developed and optimized for paper-based substrates for use in paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS). A variety of chlorosilanes were explored for coating paper substrates, and their effectiveness in forming hydrophobic surfaces was characterized contact angle goniometry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Trichloromethylsilane was selected as the primary coating agent because of the short time required to produce a hydrophobic surface (contact angle > 130°), as well as the ease of patterning. Patterning was performed using 3D-printed masks and an oxygen/plasma cleaner. Optimal mask thickness and oxygen/plasma cleaning parameters were determined to produce channels varying from 0.5 to 2.5 mm in width. The effectiveness of the patterned substrates for PS-MS was determined analysis of four antiretrovirals: emtricitabine, lamivudine, efavirenz, and dolutegravir. Calibration curves were made for each antiretroviral at varying channel widths, and the limits of detection and limits of quantification for each drug were determined. These results show that this patterning method results in an average 7.2-fold improvement in sensitivity and an average 190-fold improvement in limits of detection over uncoated paper substrates in a neat matrix. In a proof-of-concept experiment, calibration curves were generated for each antiretroviral in urine. A patterned paper substrate with a 2-mm channel resulted in an average 7.4-fold improvement in sensitivity and an average 18-fold improvement in limits of detection over uncoated paper substrates.

We describe a rare case of upper septal fascicular ventricular tachycardia (VT) associated with takotsubo syndrome that failed to convert with synchronized shock but converted to normal sinus rhythm after intravenous adenosine administration. The excess catecholamine state of takotsubo syndrome likely provided substrate for cyclic adenosine monophosphate-mediated triggered activity, causing fascicular VT.

Agriculture and industrial waste are produced in large volumes every year worldwide, causing serious concerns about their disposal. These wastes have high organic content, which microorganisms can easily assimilate into relevant value-added products. Valorization of agro-industrial waste is required for sustainable development.

Human citrate synthase (hCS) was kinetically characterized through full progress curve kinetic modelling using kinetic simulation, global fitting of the direct AcCoA to CoA transition, and a coupled thiol probe reaction to better determine the kinetics with low substrate concentration. Our analysis provides one of the most rigorous kinetic analyses of any citrate synthase ruling out the need to invoke complex cooperative mechanisms to explain progress curve data. Furthermore, we collected and modeled stopped-flow pH-dependent kinetic data with CoA and popular thiol probes such as Ellman's reagent (DTNB) and 4,4'-Dithiodipyridine (DPS), providing the opportunity for detailed kinetic simulations using these thiol probes with CoA producing enzymes.

Palladium-catalyzed reactions between imidazo[1,2-]pyridine derivatives and 4-bromo-2,2-dialkyl-substituted 2-chromenes under microwave irradiation at 100 W, 120 °C for 20-30 min provided a series of new 3-(2,2-dialkyl-2-chromen-4-yl)-2-phenylimidazo[1,2-]pyridine derivatives in good to excellent yields. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed through spectroscopic techniques (NMR and HRMS). The X-ray single-crystal structure of compound 16e was also determined.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are garnering increasing interest for ultrasensitive high-throughput sensing. Notably, SERS-encoded nanostructures stand out due to their potential for nearly unlimited codification with excellent optical properties. In this paper we report a simple, versatile and cost-effective method for preparing SERS-encoded clusters.
