Acoustic system and machine vision were used to evaluate the effects of different harvest dates on the quality and sensory attributes of exotic apple varieties of North Western Himalayan. (V1) was harvested at 110 (H1), 120 (H2) and 130 (H3) Days from Full Bloom (DFFB); (V2) and (V3) were harvested at 130 (H1), 140 (H2) and 150 (H3) DFFB. Highest acoustic coefficient (21.13) and firmness (20.72 lbs) recorded at first harvest date (H1) decreased significantly (p (19.86 to 17.90 lbs) at second harvest (H2) and (17.77 to 16.80 lbs) at third harvest date. Highest starch iodine rating (3.72); anthocyanin content (24.81 mg/100 g); total soluble solids (12.10 %); total sugars (8.75 %) were recorded at H3 in all the varieties. For (V1) 130 DFFB and for (V2) and (V3) 150 DFFB were predicted as suitable harvesting dates for table consumption.

Article Synopsis
  • Unfavorable weather conditions negatively affect the natural ripening of date fruits, leading to significant waste.
  • The study explored how artificial ripening, specifically using hot water immersion for various time intervals, impacted the quality of immature date cultivars.
  • Results showed that a 30-second hot water treatment improved the color, ripening index, and nutritional composition (like sugars, fiber, and antioxidants) of dates, with the Khadrawi and Jihadi varieties being particularly well-received in taste tests.

The study aimed to explore suitable substrates comprising locally available hardwood sawdusts for the cultivation of Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) in Lebanon. Sawdusts of oak (OS), maple (MAP), and eucalyptus (EUC) were used alone or in combination, supplemented equally by wheat bran (WB). Results showed that complete mycelia run, fruiting, and harvest dates were the minimum in OS-WB: 800-200 by 72.

Maternal diesel particle exposure alters gut microbiota and induces lung injury in rat offspring.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

November 2024

Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) during pregnancy adversely affects fetal lung development and gut microbiota in both mothers and their offspring.
  • - Rats exposed to DEP showed increased lung injury, higher levels of inflammatory cytokines, and altered gut microbiota composition compared to unexposed controls.
  • - The lung damage in offspring is potentially associated with changes in gut microbiota and disrupted metabolic pathways resulting from the mother's DEP exposure.

Exploration of Strawberry Fruit Quality During Harvest Season Under a Semi-Forcing Culture with Plants Nursed Without Chilling.

Plants (Basel)

October 2024

Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria INIA, Camino al Terrible s/n, Salto 50000, Uruguay.

Strawberry, a profitable crop, adapts well to diverse environments. This study evaluated the stability of fruit quality in different strawberry varieties produced as green plants without chilling during the harvest season in northern Uruguay. The focus was on understanding the impact of harvest date versus agricultural practices (different orchards and growers) on key fruit quality variables such as color, firmness, sugars, and acidity.

Heat storage materials improve the utility of solar air heaters (SAHs) after sunset. This study investigates an improved solar air heater (SAH) performance with baffles and waste mild steel chips as sensible heat storage (SHS) materials. Comparative experimental natural convection heat transfer studies were performed with four different improved air heater setups under similar solar radiation conditions.
