A phosphine-catalyzed domino assembly of six units of 2-bromomethyl acrylates afforded polyalkenyl adducts containing two cyclohexenyl rings. This reaction occurs under mild conditions providing the final product by formation of seven carbon-carbon bonds and four stereocenters. Experimental and computational studies support an initial dimerization of the substrate, which in turn trimerizes involving two totally regio- and stereocontrolled Diels-Alder cycloadditions. The yield of the hexamerization of the 2-bromomethyl acrylates depends on the size of the ester function. The protocol has also proved to be practicable on a gram scale.

An unexpected phosphine-catalyzed controllable three-component domino reaction involving [1 + 2 + 2] annulation and [1 + 2 + 2]/[3 + 2] sequential annulation reaction of 2-arylmethylidene cyanoacetates/malononitriles with Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates has been developed. A broad range of densely functionalized cyclopentanes and diquinanes bearing five or four consecutive stereogenic centers, including two all-carbon quaternary stereocenters, were smoothly acquired in moderate to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions from readily available materials. Moreover, this divergent transformation enables the simultaneous generation of three or four new C-C bonds and one or two carbocyclic rings in only one step.

A novel phosphine-catalyzed domino annulation reaction of γ-vinyl allenoates and -aminotrifluoacetophenones for the construction of terahydrofuro[3,2-]quinoline derivatives has been developed. In this domino reaction, two kinds of terahydrofuro[3,2-]quinoline compounds containing CF groups were obtained with good yields under mild conditions, three new C-N, C-C, and C-O bonds can be built in one step, and the reaction selectivity is achieved by adjusting the reaction conditions. Furthermore, preliminary studies on an asymmetric variant of this reaction proceeded with moderate enantioselectivity.

The tri(-butyl)phosphine-catalyzed reaction of isatylidene malononitriles and bis-chalcones in chloroform at 65 °C afforded functionalized spiro[cyclohexane-1,3'-indolines] in good yields and with good diastereoselectivity. On the other hand, the tri(-butyl)phosphine-catalyzed reaction of 3-(ethoxycarbonylmethylene)oxindoles and bis-chalcones gave functionalized spiro[cyclohexane-1,3'-indolines] with different regioselectivity. Additionally, the tri(-butyl)phosphine-promoted domino annulation reaction of isatins and ethyl isatylidene cyanoacetates produced spiro[indoline-3,2'-furan-3',3''-indolines] in satisfactory yields.

In the presence of NUSIOC-Phos, triketone enone substrates smoothly reacted with γ-substituted allenoates to form bicyclic furofurans in good yields with high stereoselectivities. Alternatively, the reaction between diester-activated enone substrates and γ-substituted allenoates formed chiral conjugated 1,3-dienes in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities.
