Perovskite oxides O continue to be a major focus in materials science. Of particular interest is the interplay between and cations as exemplified by intersite charge transfer (ICT), which causes novel phenomena including negative thermal expansion and metal-insulator transition. However, the ICT properties were achieved and optimized by cationic substitution or ordering. Here we demonstrate an anionic approach to induce ICT using an oxyhydride perovskite, EuVOH, which has alternating layers of EuH and VO. A bulk EuVOH behaves as a ferromagnetic insulator with a relatively high transition temperature () of 10 K. However, the application of external pressure to the EuVOH bulk or compressive strain from the substrate in the thin films induces ICT from the EuH layer to the VO layer due to the extended empty V d orbital. The ICT phenomenon causes the VO layer to become conductive, leading to an increase in that is dependent on the number of carriers in the d orbitals (up to a factor of 4 for 10 nm thin films). In addition, a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy appears with the ICT for the films of <100 nm, which is unprecedented in materials with orbital-free Eu, opening new perspectives for applications. The present results provide opportunities for the acquisition of novel functions by alternating transition metal/rare earth layers with heteroanions.

In polymerization-induced phase separation, the impact of polymer-substrate interaction on the dynamics of phase separation for polymer blends is important in determining the final morphology and properties of polymer materials as the surface can act as another driving force for phase separation other than polymerization. We modify the previously-developed polymerizing Cahn-Hilliard (pCH) method by adding a surface potential to model the phase separation behavior of a mixture of two species independently undergoing linear step-growth polymerization in the presence of a surface. In our approach, we explicitly model polydispersity by separately considering different molecular-weight components with their own respective diffusion constants, and with the surface potential preferentially acting on only one species.

Magnetization switching by charge current without a magnetic field is essential for device applications and information technology. It generally requires a current-induced out-of-plane spin polarization beyond the capability of conventional ferromagnet/heavy-metal systems, where the current-induced spin polarization aligns in-plane orthogonal to the in-plane charge current and out-of-plane spin current. Here, a new approach is demonstrated for magnetic-field-free switching by fabricating a van-der-Waals magnet and oxide FeGeTe/SrTiO heterostructure.

Porous nanomaterials have shown great promise in many desalination applications. Zeolite nanotubes, featuring abundant but inhomogeneous nanopores on their surface, have been recently synthesized in experiments; however, their capacity for desalination is not yet understood. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the capability of assembled zeolite nanotube membranes to perform in desalination applications due to their inherent multiscale porous properties.

The two-fold reduction of tetrabenzo[a,c,e,g]cyclooctatetraene (TBCOT, or tetraphenylene, 1) with K, Rb, and Cs metals reveals a distinctive core transformation pathway: a newly formed C-C bond converts the central eight-membered ring into a twisted core with two fused five-membered rings. This C-C bond of 1.589(3)-1.

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have emerged as a promising platform for studying exchange bias (EB) phenomena due to their atomically flat surfaces and highly versatile stacking configurations. Although complex spin configurations between 2D vdW interfaces introduce challenges in understanding their underlying mechanisms, they can offer more possibilities in realizing effective manipulations. In this study, we present a spin-orthogonal arranged 2D FeGaTe (FGaT)/CrSBr vdW heterostructure, realizing the EB effect with the bias field as large as 1730 Oe at 2 K.
