Background Light Suppression for Multispectral Imaging in Surgical Settings.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Institute of Smart Systems and Services, Pforzheim University, 75175 Pforzheim, Germany.

Multispectral imaging (MSI) enables non-invasive tissue differentiation based on spectral characteristics and has shown great potential as a tool for surgical guidance. However, adapting MSI to open surgeries is challenging. Systems that rely on light sources present in the operating room experience limitations due to frequent lighting changes, which distort the spectral data and require countermeasures such as disruptive recalibrations.

Photovoltaic arrays are exposed to outdoor conditions year-round, leading to degradation, cracks, open circuits, and other faults. Hence, the establishment of an effective fault diagnosis system for photovoltaic arrays is of paramount importance. However, existing fault diagnosis methods often trade off between high accuracy and localization.

Optically Decoupling Electrochromic Dynamics and Morphological Evolution of a Single Soft Polyaniline Nanoentity.

Nano Lett

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, Chemistry and Biomedicine Innovation Center (ChemBIC), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China.

Electroresponsive multicolored materials have tremendous potential in flexible electronics and smart wearable devices. Herein, the electrochromic dynamics and morphological evolution of a single soft polyaniline nanoentity can be visualized and decoupled by an opto-electrochemical imaging strategy. The durability, tinting speed, and reversibility down to the single-nanoparticle level are quantified, and the switching of transient intermediate electrochromic states is trapped.

Laminaran potentiates cGAS-STING signaling to enhance antiviral responses.

Int Immunopharmacol

Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway, an essential element in the innate antiviral immune responses, has emerged as a key component of innate immune system to modulate type I IFNs production and response by recognizing both exogenous and endogenous DNA. Although some cGAS-STING signaling small molecule agonists have been developed, there are few natural polysaccharides reported to activate cGAS-STING signaling for the treatment of infectious diseases. Here, we reported that Laminaran, a low molecular weight β-glucan storage polysaccharide present in brown algae, potentiates cGAS-STING signaling to promote type I IFNs production and antiviral response.

Geometrically modulated contact forces enable hula hoop levitation.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Applied Mathematics Laboratory, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Mathematics, New York University, New York, NY 10012.

Mechanical systems with moving points of contact-including rolling, sliding, and impacts-are common in engineering applications and everyday experiences. The challenges in analyzing such systems are compounded when an object dynamically explores the complex surface shape of a moving structure, as arises in familiar but poorly understood contexts such as hula hooping. We study this activity as a unique form of mechanical levitation against gravity and identify the conditions required for the stable suspension of an object rolling around a gyrating body.
