Human language sentences are standardly understood as exhibiting considerable hierarchical structure: they can and typically do contain parts that in turn contain parts, etc. In other words, sentences are thought to generally exhibit significant nested part-whole structure. As far as we can tell, this is not a feature of the gestural or vocal communication systems of our great ape relatives. So, one of the many challenges we face in providing a theory of human language evolution is to explain the evolution of hierarchically structured communication in our line. This article takes up that challenge. More specifically, I first present and motivate an account of hierarchical structure in language that departs significantly from the orthodox conception of such structure in linguistics and evolutionary discussions that draw on linguistic theory. On the account I propose, linguistic structure, including hierarchical structure, is treated as a special case of structured action. This account is rooted in the cognitive neuroscience of action, as opposed to (formal) linguistic theory. Among other things, such an account enables us to see how selection for enhanced capacities of act organization and act control in actors, and for act interpretation in observers, might have constructed the brain machinery necessary for the elaborate forms of hierarchically structured communication that we humans engage in. I flesh out this line of thought, emphasizing in particular the role of hominin technique and technology, and the social learning thereof, as evolutionary drivers of this brain machinery.

NH-Modulated Cathodic Interfacial Spatial Charge Redistribution for High-Performance Dual-Ion Capacitors.

Compared with Zn, the current mainly reported charge carrier for zinc hybrid capacitors, small-hydrated-sized and light-weight NH is expected as a better one to mediate cathodic interfacial electrochemical behaviors, yet has not been unraveled. Here we propose an NH-modulated cationic solvation strategy to optimize cathodic spatial charge distribution and achieve dynamic Zn/NH co-storage for boosting Zinc hybrid capacitors. Owing to the hierarchical cationic solvated structure in hybrid Zn(CFSO)-NHCFSO electrolyte, high-reactive Zn and small-hydrate-sized NH(HO) induce cathodic interfacial Helmholtz plane reconfiguration, thus effectively enhancing the spatial charge density to activate 20% capacity enhancement.

Purpose: This study aims to test the nurses' authentic leadership's direct and indirect impact on job satisfaction and intent to stay through work-to-family conflict (WFC) in health-care organizations.

Design/methodology/approach: Data were gathered at three different time points from 262 nurses employed in public hospitals across Bangladesh. Hierarchical regression analysis using structural equation modeling and PROCESS Macro were used to test the hypotheses.

Carbon quantum dot-anchored polyaniline on electrospun carbon nanofibers as freestanding electrodes for symmetric solid-state supercapacitors.

A binder-free and freestanding electrode was designed by uniformly immobilizing carbon quantum dot (CQD)-anchored polyaniline (PANI) heterostructures onto electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) a facile hierarchical assembly process. The fabricated freestanding CNF/PANI/CQD electrode exhibits a unique three-dimensional (3D) network nanostructure, which accelerates ion migration between the interior and surface of the electrode, thereby enhancing its charging and discharging performance. Moreover, the functional groups on the surface of CQDs could anchor PANI through possible chemical bonding, which not only improves the stability of the PANI/CQD heterojunction but also creates an additional conductive channel for the PANI polymer.

Recent advances in generative modeling enable efficient sampling of protein structures, but their tendency to optimize for designability imposes a bias toward idealized structures at the expense of loops and other complex structural motifs critical for function. We introduce SHAPES (Structural and Hierarchical Assessment of Proteins with Embedding Similarity) to evaluate five state-of-the-art generative models of protein structures. Using structural embeddings across multiple structural hierarchies, ranging from local geometries to global protein architectures, we reveal substantial undersampling of the observed protein structure space by these models.

Given the same external input, one's understanding of that input can differ based on internal contextual knowledge. Where and how does the brain represent latent belief frameworks that interact with incoming sensory information to shape subjective interpretations? In this study, participants listened to the same auditory narrative twice, with a plot twist in the middle that dramatically shifted their interpretations of the story. Using a robust within-subject whole-brain approach, we leveraged shifts in neural activity between the two listens to identify where latent interpretations are represented in the brain.
