Hydrogen energy is regarded as an auspicious future substitute to replace fossil fuels, due to its environmentally friendly characteristics and high energy density. In the pursuit of clean hydrogen production, there has been a significant focus on the advancement of effective electrocatalysts for the process of water splitting. Although noble metals like Pt, Ru, Pd and Ir are superb electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), they have limitations for large-scale applications, mainly high cost and low abundance. As a result, non-precious transition metals have emerged as promising candidates to replace their more expensive counterparts in various applications. This review focuses on recently developed transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts for the HER in alkaline media due to the cooperative effect between the phosphorus and transition metals. Finally, we discuss the challenges of TMPs for HER.

It is especially essential to develop high-performance and low-cost nonprecious metal catalysts for large-scale hydrogen production. A large number of electrochemical catalysts composited by transition metal centers has been reported; however, it is still a great challenge to design and manipulate target electrocatalysts to realize high overall water-splitting activity at the atomic level. Herein, we develop totally new P-(Fe,V)-codoped metastable-phase β-NiMoO.

The design of well-engineered bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for achieving durable and efficient performance in overall water splitting. In this study, Ru-doped FeMn-MOF-74 itself has Ru sites and generates FeMnOOH under catalytic conditions, forming dual active sites for overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the Ru dopants exhibit optimized binding strength for H* and enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance.

Defining the active sites and further optimizing their activity are of great significance for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performances, especially for inexpensive Ni-based catalysts doped with metals and nonmetal elements. This work reports the role of the incorporated molybdenum and sulfur in enhancing the HER activity of nickel. The prepared molybdenum and sulfur coincorporated Ni (NMS) electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER performance, with an overpotential and Tafel slope of 77.

The reasonable design of an economical and robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is both essential but challenging. Herein, we synthesized a multi-interfacial NiP/WS/CoWO@C hybrid electrocatalyst devived from the heterometallic clusters [Co(TC4A)(WO)Cl][HPWO], in which NiP was incorporated into WS/CoWO@C nanosheets via interfacial interactions by in situ phosphorization processes. Theoretical calculations revealed that moderate electron transfer from CoWO and NiP to WS induced by the multi-heterojunction significantly regulate the binding energies of the reactive intermediates, thus enhacing its intrinsic activity.

Electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) presents a promising approach for converting excess glycerol (GLY) into high-value-added products. However, the complex mechanism and the challenge of achieving selectivity for diverse products make GOR difficult to address in both experimental and theoretical studies. In this work, three nitrogen-doped graphene-supported copper single-atom catalysts (CuN@Gra SACs, x = 2-4) were selected as the model system due to their simple structure, excellent conductivity and high structural stability.
