Published: September 2023

Bandgaps of traditional phononic crystals (PCs) are determined using structural geometric parameters and material properties, and they are difficult to tune in practical applications. Piezoelectric PCs with lead zirconium titanate piezoelectric ceramics (abbreviated to piezoelectric PCs) have multi-physics coupling effects and their bandgaps can be tuned through external circuits to expand the application range of the PCs. First, the typical structures of piezoelectric PCs are summarized and analyzed. According to the structure, common tunable piezoelectric PCs can be roughly divided into three categories: PCs that only contain piezoelectric materials (single piezoelectric PCs), PCs composed of embedded piezoelectric materials in elastic materials (composite piezoelectric PCs), and PCs that are composed of an elastic base structure and attached piezoelectric patches (patch-type piezoelectric PCs). Second, the tuning methods of bandgaps for piezoelectric PCs are summarized and analyzed. Then, the calculation methods of the bandgaps of piezoelectric PCs are reviewed and analyzed. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the research status of piezoelectric PCs, shortcomings of the existing research are discussed, and future development directions are proposed.

Aiming to address the vibration noise problems on ships, we constructed a piezoelectric phononic crystal (PC) plate structure model, solved the governing equations of the structure using the partial differential equations module (PDE) in the finite element softwareCOMSOL6.1, and obtained the corresponding energy band structure, transmission curves, and vibration modal diagrams. The application of this method to probe the structural properties of two-dimensional piezoelectric PCs is described in detail.

Conformally Large-Area Single-Crystal Piezocomposites with High Performance for Acoustic Transducers.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

August 2023

School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710049, China.

Large-area and conformal piezoelectric elements are highly desired for acoustic transducers to possess a large power source level and wide detecting range. To date, single-crystal piezocomposites attract much attention on enhancing the power source level and bandwidth for next-generation acoustic transducers, owing to their higher piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling properties compared to traditional piezocomposites. Unfortunately, it is still challenging to achieve large-area and conformal single-crystal piezocomposites because of the fragile nature, large anisotropy, and the limited grown size of piezoelectric single crystals.

Background: Non-invasive tracking of beat-to-beat pulse transit time (PTT) via piezoelectric/piezocapacitive sensors (PES/PCS) may expand perioperative hemodynamic monitoring. This study evaluated the ability for PTT via PES/PCS to correlate with systolic, diastolic, and mean invasive blood pressure (SBP, DBP, and MAP, respectively) and to detect SBP fluctuations.

Methods: PES/PCS and IBP measurements were performed in 20 patients undergoing abdominal, urological, and cardiac surgery.

Investigations on Five PMMA Closed Types of Piezo Actuators as a Cooling Fan.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2023

Department of Marine Engineering (DME), National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), Keelung 202301, Taiwan.

There are five closed types of piezo actuators (closed type of PA, closed PA) as a cooling fan relative to those different PAJs of the previous work (open type of PAJ, open PAJ) for analysis in the present study. Closed PA was composed of circular piezoelectric ceramics (PCs) and acrylic (PMMA) plates and investigated on five different types at operating conditions. The results show that the noise of the closed PA is quieter than that of the open PAJ by about 10 dB.
