Recent Advances in the Aggregation Behavior of Nanoplastics in Aquatic Systems.

This short review aims to critically discuss the recent advances in supramolecular chemistry to achieve the aggregation of nanoplastics in aquatic systems. Polymer modification provides a vital tool for designing novel and ad hoc synthesized surfactants with properties tuned for some specific applications (e.g., stimuli-responsive nanomaterial, conducting polymers), mainly to aggregate other polymers from the environment. Far from the typical use of surfactants, which ease the dispersion of insoluble molecules in water media or aid solubilization of insoluble molecules on local media, in this case, nanoarchitectonics serve researchers to design surfactants with a focus on the capture of nanoplastics from the environment. Additionally, monovalent and divalent salt additions aided NPs in coagulating in the aquatic systems. Finally, the latest research on NPs' removal efficiency on wastewater treatment plant is reviewed to summarize the advances.

Tire wear microplastics (TWMs) are continuously generated during driving and are subsequently released into the environment, where they pose potential risks to aquatic organisms. In this study, the effects of untreated, hydrated, and environmentally aged TWMs on the growth, root development, photosynthesis, electron transport system (ETS) activity, and energy-rich molecules of duckweed Lemna minor were investigated. The results indicated that untreated and aged TWMs have the most pronounced negative effects on Lemna minor, as evidenced by reduced growth and impaired root development.

This study assesses the occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) from agricultural and livestock production activities along the Salado River (Santa Fe province, Argentina). Of the 23 ECs studied, 8 were detected and quantified in river and wastewater samples, including ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, chlorpyrifos-methyl, albendazole, fenbendazole, levamisole, diazepam, and thiamethoxam. In river samples, the highest concentrations corresponded to ciprofloxacin, chlorpyrifos-methyl, and enrofloxacin.

Over the past two decades, research into the accumulation of small plastic particles and fibers in organisms and environmental settings has yielded over 7,000 studies, highlighting the widespread presence of microplastics in ecosystems, wildlife, and human bodies. In recent years, these contaminants have posed a significant threat to human, animal, and environmental health, with most efforts concentrated on removing them from aquatic systems. Given this urgency, the purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of rhamnolipid, a biosurfactant, for the removal of microplastics from water.
