The malposition of the tip of a central venous catheter occurs in 5 to 30 per cent of the attempts. Repositioning of the catheter tip can be successfully and safely performed in 87.5 per cent of the patients using a Fogarty balloon catheter and flow directed techniques to float the CVP catheter to the ideal location in the superior vena cava. Since the first attempt is almost uniformly successful (in six of seven patients), the flow directed technique is both cost effective and clinically efficient.

The clinical potential of current chimeric antigen receptor-engineered T (CAR-T) cell therapy is hampered by its autologous nature that poses considerable challenges in manufacturing, costs and patient selection. This spurs demand for off-the-shelf therapies. Here we introduce an ex vivo feeder-free culture method to differentiate gene-engineered hematopoietic stem and progenitor (HSP) cells into allogeneic invariant natural killer T (NKT) cells and their CAR-armed derivatives (CAR-NKT cells).

Bipolar disorder (BD) involves altered reward processing and decision-making, with inconsistencies across studies. Here, we integrated hierarchical Bayesian modelling with magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterise maladaptive belief updating in this condition. First, we determined if previously reported increased learning rates in BD stem from a heightened expectation of environmental changes.

Fish migration modeling and habitat assessment in a complex fluvial system.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610065, China. Electronic address:

Fish migration patterns are driven by hydrodynamic factors, which are essential in aquatic ecology. This study investigated the hydrodynamic drivers of Gymnocypris przewalskii fish migration in two distinct river reaches-a straight reach (SR) and a confluence reach (CR)- in the area of Qinghai Lake, China, using a 3D numerical model, fish density field data, and four predictive models. Thirteen hydrodynamic factors, with a focus on water depth and velocity, were analyzed to identify their influence on fish migration.

From spermatogenesis to fertilisation: the role of melatonin on ram spermatozoa.

This review presents recent findings on the effect of melatonin on ram spermatozoa. This hormone regulates seasonal reproduction in the ovine species through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but it also exerts direct effects on spermatogenesis, seminal quality and fertility. In the testis, melatonin stimulates blood flow to this organ, but it also appears to be involved in the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells and the secretion of testosterone through the MT1 and MT2 receptors.

Investigating Cell-Induced Mixing Dynamics in Microfluidic Droplets Using the Lattice Boltzmann Method.

Langmuir

January 2025

CNNFM Lab, School of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Tehran, P.O. Box 11155-4563 Tehran, Iran.

This study investigates the impact of cell dynamics on mixing efficiency within a microfluidic droplet, emphasizing the relationship between cell motion, deformability, and resultant asymmetry in velocity and concentration fields. Simulations were conducted for droplets containing encapsulated cells at varying Peclet numbers ( = 100-800) and coupling constants ( = 0.0025, 0.
