Slowly progressive restriction in respiratory function was observed in five reproduction photographers who had been exposed to fumes of carbon arc lamps for more than a decade. In all cases interstitial lung fibrosis had developed and accumulations of fine granular dust particles were found in the tissue. Combined analyses including X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, plasma analysis, X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction revealed the presence of rare earth minerals (mainly cerium compounds) in all lungs. The rare earth minerals originating from the core of the burned carbon rods used in the arc lamps represent the etiological factors responsible for the development of so-called "cerium pneumoconiosis".

Ultraviolet (UV) hyperspectral imaging shows significant promise for the classification and quality assessment of raw cotton, a key material in the textile industry. This study evaluates the efficacy of UV hyperspectral imaging (225-408 nm) using two different light sources: xenon arc (XBO) and deuterium lamps, in comparison to NIR hyperspectral imaging. The aim is to determine which light source provides better differentiation between cotton types in UV hyperspectral imaging, as each interacts differently with the materials, potentially affecting imaging quality and classification accuracy.

Sun protection, progress, myths, and inconsistencies (a proposal for the democratization of ISO 24443).

The concept of modern human sun protection is no more than one hundred years, but real development of it, including protection against UVA + UVB radiation (and more recently also the IR and blue light), has been no more than 30 years. One fundamental issue while formulating sunscreens is the photostability of the UV filters, which is particularly feeble for the UVA. The gold standard for the determination of sunscreen UVA protection "in vitro" is ISO 24443:2021.

Composite materials are the most common materials in use in modern dentistry. Over the years, the methods of photopolymerization of composite materials have been improved with the use of various devices, such as quartz tungsten halogen lamps (QTHs), light-emitting diode units (LEDs), plasma-arc lamps and argon-ion lasers. This study aimed to compare the mechanical properties of a composite material, depending on the time and mode of photopolymerization.

High flux solar simulators are artificial solar facilities developed to imitate the on-sun operations of concentrating solar power technologies but under a well-controlled lab-scale environment. We report the optical enhancement of different high flux solar simulators for solar thermal and thermochemical applications. The solar simulator enhancement is numerically conducted by optimizing the geometry of ellipsoidal reflectors at focal lengths of 1600, 1800, and 2000 mm.

Herein, we report the theoretical investigation on the photonic nanojets (PNJs) of single dielectric microspheres illuminated by focused broadband radiation (polychromatic light) from a Halogen lamp, supercontinuum source, light-emitting diode, and Hg arc lamp. The role of incident beam waist, refractive index of the surrounding medium, and radius of the microsphere on the characteristic parameters such as the electric field intensity enhancement, effective width, and length of the PNJ is studied. Interestingly, the characteristic parameters of the PNJs of solid microspheres obtained for the above-mentioned broadband radiation sources are found close to those observed for the focused monochromatic radiation of wavelengths which are near to the central wavelengths of the sources.
