Hard-Soft Cooperativity of an Allosteric Tweezer.

Published: October 2023

Drawing inspiration from allosteric proteins, a zigzag-shaped π-conjugation was structurally engineered into a tweezer-like ionophore having multiple disparate binding sites. When a soft metal ion binds to the central tridentate ligand motif, the rigid backbone folds, bringing two macrocyclic arms into close proximity. Stabilized by a coordinating anion, the tweezer-like conformation of the resulting metalloligand recruits a hard cation to form a sandwich-like complex with a remarkably enhanced binding affinity and selectivity.

Hard-Soft Thermoset Alloy with Enhanced Toughness, Impact-Resistance, and Electric Conductivity via Interpenetrated Dynamic Crosslinked Interface.

Macromol Rapid Commun

July 2023

Polymer alloys (PAs) are mixtures of two or more types of polymers to enhance the properties of polymeric materials. However, thermosets with crosslinked structures are immiscible and cannot be prepared PAs. Herein, two immiscible covalent adaptable networks containing phenoxy carbamate bonds are explored as the typical polymeric materials to prepare the hard-soft thermoset alloy (HSTA) by the interpenetrated dynamic crosslinked interface (IDCI) to enhance the toughness.

Poly(amic acid) (PAA) materials as the precursor of polyimide generally show remarkably poor mechanical properties, thus limiting their application as the engineering plastics. In this study, it is demonstrated that the mechanical properties of PAA materials can be improved significantly for tens of folds with breaking strength >50 MPa, Young's modulus >400 MPa, and elongation at break >300% by incorporation of 20% (mol%) poly(propylene glycol) (PPO) soft segments. The optimization for suitable hard-soft composition with 20% PPO and the existence of various hydrogen bonds with different binding energies can dissipate energies efficiently, which simultaneously improve the material strength and toughness.

Iron-based compounds with a ThMn-type structure have the potential to bridge the gap between ferrites and high performance NdFeB magnets. From the point of view of possible applications, the main advantage is their composition, with about 10 wt.% less rare earth elements in comparison with the 2:14:1 phase.

Effects of Shape Anisotropy on Hard-Soft Exchange-Coupled Permanent Magnets.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

April 2022

Faculty of Materials and Manufacturing, Key Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials, Ministry of Education of China, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China.

Exchange-coupled magnets are promising candidates for a new generation of permanent magnets. Here, we investigated the effect of soft magnetic shell thickness and the aspect ratio of the hard magnetic core on the magnetic properties for isolated core/shell cylinder exchange-coupled magnets, as well as the packing effect of the cylindrical array via a micromagnetic simulation method. It was found that the shape anisotropy contributions to the magnetic properties in the cylindrical core/shell exchange-coupled magnets are closely related to the thickness of the soft magnetic shell.
