The objective of this study is to assess the performance of an innovative AI-powered tool for sex determination using panoramic radiographs (PR) and to explore factors affecting the performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN). The study involved 207,946 panoramic dental X-rays and their corresponding reports from 15 clinical centers in São Paulo, Brazil. The PRs were acquired with four different devices, and 58% of the patients were female. Data preprocessing included anonymizing the exams, extracting pertinent information from the reports, such as sex, age, type of dentition, and number of missing teeth, and organizing the data into a PostgreSQL database. Two neural network architectures, a standard CNN and a ResNet, were utilized for sex classification, with both undergoing hyperparameter tuning and cross-validation to ensure optimal performance. The CNN model achieved 95.02% accuracy in sex estimation, with image resolution being a significant influencing factor. The ResNet model attained over 86% accuracy in subjects older than 6 years and over 96% in those over 16 years. The algorithm performed better on female images, and the area under the curve (AUC) exceeded 96% for most age groups, except the youngest. Accuracy values were also assessed for different dentition types (deciduous, mixed, and permanent) and missing teeth. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of an AI-driven tool for sex determination using PR and emphasizes the role of image resolution, age, and sex in determining the algorithm's performance.

To (1) assess the accuracy of the Uscom BP+ oscillometric upper-arm professional blood pressure (BP) monitor in children and adolescents as per the AAMI/ESH/ISO Universal Standard (ISO 81060-2:2018); (2) assess the suitability of a non-standard cuff; and (3) assess the impact of motion artefact on device accuracy and precision. Children and adolescents were recruited to fulfil the sex/cuff distribution criteria of the Universal Standard. Single arm sequential BP measurements were used, the test device measured on deflate with an altered child/adolescent algorithm, using three standard (Extra Small, Small Adult, Adult) and, as exploratory analysis, additionally in one non-standard cuff (Wide Range; WR) (arm circumferences: 12-17, 16-24, 22-32, 22-42 cm, respectively).

Background: Intentionally impairing the fecundity of mass-reared insects has important utility in controlling pest species. Typically, sterilized individuals are competed against wild counterparts, reducing pest population size. A novel consideration is creating biocontrol agents with lower reproductive capacity that are less likely to establish permanently or admix with wild populations, which are both emerging as legal barriers.

Signs of virilization, such as clitoromegaly, labio-scrotal fusion, and urogenital sinus may be observed in females with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) and other rare virilizing forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This makes sex determination difficult, and multiple reconstructive surgeries in the postnatal period may be required. As 21-OHD is an autosomal recessive disease, the chance of any child being affected is one in four and so only one in eight will be an affected female.

The cross-sectional diameter, also known as caliber, of axons and dendrites is an important parameter of neuron shape, best appreciated for its influence on the speed of action potential propagation. Most studies of axon caliber focus on cell-wide regulation and assume that caliber is static.

Background: It has been proposed that risk model-based strategies could serve as viable alternatives to traditional risk factor-based approaches in lung cancer screening; however, there has been no systematic discussion. In this review, we provide an overview of the benefits, harms, and cost-effectiveness of these two strategies in lung cancer screening application, as well as discussing possible future research directions.
Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane libraries, and EMBASE from January 1994 to April 2024.
