Tuberose flowers (Calcutta Single variety) valued as ornamentals globally, have short shelf-lives of 8 days at 4 ± 1 °C and are therefore discarded post senescence. Previous investigations from our laboratory have established that a combination treatment using GRAS preservatives [(sucrose (4%) and CaCl (0.02%)]-cum-gamma-irradiation (0.02 kGy) could extend its shelf-life to 24 days, when stored at 4 ± 1 °C with concomitant enhancement in the content of its bioactive principle, viz. methyl eugenol. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO) extract of the tuberose flower wastes post combination treatment therefore had a higher methyl eugenol content (4.11 ± 0.05 µg/g), vis-à-vis its non-treated counterpart (2.03 ± 0.03 µg/g), and thus significantly higher antioxidant and antimicrobial potencies (MIC values of 1.83 ± 0.02 mg/ml and 1.98 ± 0.03 mg/ml against S. aureus ATCC 25923 strain and MDR strain, respectively). The microencapsulated powder of the extract (ME) obtained by spray drying was applied for healing of epidermal wounds created on New Zealand white rabbits, post skin irritancy test (wherein no clinical sign of toxicity, redness or swelling was observed). When ME was applied, accelerated healing occurred which commenced on day 2 and was completed by day 6 vis-à-vis that of the control powder set (without extract) which showed no signs of wound healing. Therefore, the sensorially compromised-senesced tuberose flowers, a rich source of methyl eugenol, has been successfully valorized through utilization of the same in developing a novel topical antibiotic powder against potent skin pathogens.

This study presents the first complete analysis of the chemical composition of the flowers of the species and . The compounds were extracted distillation and simultaneous extraction and analysed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. A total of 82 compounds were identified and the results reveal significant differences in the abundance of compounds between the species.

The DNA adducts formed by the alkenylbenzene natural products, safrole (SF) and methyleugenol (MEG) are primarily attributed to their reported carcinogenic properties. Herein, we report a concise strategy to access -Ac-SF/MEG-dA phosphoramidites, which were selectively incorporated into DNA oligonucleotides by solid-phase DNA synthesis. The replication studies using human polymerases hpolκ and hpolη showed that both polymerases replicate these adducts error-free, which indicates that these polymerases do not contribute to the adduct-induced mutagenicity.

The main ingredients of Maobushisaishinto (MBST) are ephedrine (EP), methyl eugenol (ME), and aconitine (AC). The pharmacological effects are presumed to be due to the combined effects of these ingredients. In this study, we investigated the impact of the particles present in MBST suspensions on the absorption of the ingredients.

November 2024

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência e Engenharia de Materiais, Universidade Federal do Pará, Ananindeua 67130-660, Brasil.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the use of essential oil (PDEO) from Brazilian Amazon plants as an eco-friendly inhibitor for steel corrosion in hydrochloric acid, showing effective corrosion rates and inhibition efficiency over time.
  • - Different concentrations of PDEO (0.5-4 g/L) were tested, with the optimal results at 2 g/L demonstrating a corrosion rate of 4.31 mm/year and an impressive inhibition efficiency of 98.3% after 7 days.
  • - Analysis revealed that key compounds in PDEO (methyleugenol and eugenol) contribute to corrosion resistance, and the adsorption process follows the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating favorable interaction between PDEO and the steel surface.

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an invasive species that has rapidly spread across the African continent, endangering the security of agricultural industries. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is being investigated as a viable additional pest management tool to suppress B. dorsalis populations after its successful implementation in other parts of the world.
