The execution of the edible coatings and films for food preservation; vegetables, fruits, meat, and dry fruits has been ladened in history. The study of literature portrays enough pieces of evidence dating back from centuries of coatings or films being utilized for the conservation of numerous fruits and vegetables to stretch their average shelf-life. The mechanism that remains operative in extending the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables beyond the normal shelf-life is the controlled entry and exit of moisture and gases. The non- biodegradable packaging which is also non-sustainable can be substituted with compostable and edible coatings and films made up of natural biopolymers. Therefore, keeping in mind the environment and consumer safety, a score of research has been going on from former decades for the development of edible coatings and films with efficient shelf life-extending qualities. The films composed of proteins exhibit a good mechanical strength while the polysaccharide composed films and coatings show efficient gas blocking qualities, however, both lack moisture shielding attributes. These shortcomings can be fixed by combining them with lipids and or some appropriate hydrocolloids. The edible coatings and films have been integrated with various food products; however, they haven't been completely successful in substitution of the total fraction of their non-edible counterparts. The implementation of edible coatings and films have shown to serve an immense value in extending the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables along with being a sustainable and eco-friendly approach for food packaging.

The development of degradable food packaging materials with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties is a key to focus in reducing plastic waste. Chitosan is gaining interest for its versatility and easy modification, but its application is limited by the poor hydrophobicity and oleophobicity. Using polymers to modify chitosan films has been shown as a promising approach to solve this issue.

Enhancement of Thermal, Mechanical, and Oxidative Properties of Polypropylene Composites with Exfoliated Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanosheets.

ACS Omega

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Gachon University, 1342, Seongnam-daero, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do 13120, South Korea.

This study investigates the enhancement of polypropylene (PP) composites through the incorporation of exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets. The preparation process involved exfoliating h-BN in a liquid phase using a high-pressure homogenizer, followed by the coating of PP pellets with the exfoliated nanosheets using an acoustic mixer. Melt extrusion was then employed to fabricate h-BN-reinforced PP composite films.

Oriented Molecular Dipole-Enabled Modulation of NiO/Perovskite Interface for Pb-Sn Mixed Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Key University Laboratory of Highly Efficient Utilization of Solar Energy and Sustainable Development of Guangdong, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, 518055, China.

Nickel oxide (NiO) is considered as a potential hole transport material in the fabrication of lead-tin (Pb-Sn) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) for tandem applications. However, the energy level mismatch and unfavorable redox reactions between Ni species and Sn at the NiO/perovskite interface pose challenges. Herein, high-performance Pb-Sn-based inorganic PSCs are demonstrated by modulating the NiO/perovskite interface with a multifunctional 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (4-ABSA) interlayer.

Coated paper with bio-based components has sparked attention as a food packaging alternative to plastic. This study focusses on development of environmentally friendly packaging solution by electrospraying shellac over paper's surface. The goal of the study is to reduce the time of fabrication, by optimising the process parameters, concentration; 20, 30, and 40%w/v, flow rate; 10, 20, and 30 ml/h, and coating time; 100, 200, and 300 s (Concentration (% w/v))/ Flow rate (ml/h)/ time (sec)), in order to get better GSM (grams per square meter), COBB (grams of water absorbed per square meter), KIT (oil resistance ability), and WVTR (water vapor transmission rate).

Natural biopolymer-based liquid mulching films (LMF) have received widespread attention, whereas the fragile structure and limited functionality have severely restricted their application. Herein, polydopamine-coated montmorillonite micro/nanoparticles enhanced pectin-based sprayable multifunctional liquid mulching films (P-MMT@PDA LMF) were prepared. Dopamine has abundant active sites, and its self-polymerization onto the surface of MMT improves the compatibility of MMT with pectin chains, facilitates the homogeneous dispersion of MMT@PDA in pectin polymers, and makes them more tightly entangled through hydrogen bonding.
