Purpose: Low back pain is a significant health problem with a high prevalence. Studies of smaller cohorts of low back pain patients have indicated increased body sway. The present paper tests the hypothesis of an association between low back pain and postural sway in a large randomly selected population.

Methods: The current study used the fifth examination (2011-2015) of The Copenhagen City Heart Study where 4543 participated. The participants answered a self-administered questionnaire regarding pain, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, education, and other lifestyle factors. Measurement of postural body sway was performed using the CATSYS system.

Results: Totally 1134 participants (25%) reported to have low back pain. Subjects with low back pain had higher sway area and sway velocity than subjects without.

Conclusion: When using multivariate statistical analysis, confounding factors such as male gender, higher age, larger body height, low education level, smoking, and low activity level explained the association between low back pain and postural sway.

Background: Knee injuries are common among elite intercounty Gaelic games players (collectively GAA players).

Aims: The primary aim was to examine knee pain, function, and quality of life in retired elite male GAA players. Secondary objectives were to (i) report the incidence of previous knee surgery and total knee replacement, (ii) assess medication usage, and (iii) investigate any associations between a history of knee injury and/or knee surgery and knee pain, function, and quality of life among retired elite male GAA players.

Impact of Ovarian Suspensory Ligament Rupture on Surgical Stress in Elective Ovariohysterectomy in Bitches.

Vet Sci

December 2024

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde, Bem-Estar e Produção Animal Sustentável na Fronteira Sul (PPG-SBPAS), Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Realeza 85770-000, Brazil.

Ovariohysterectomy (OVH) is a common procedure in bitches, where ovarian suspensory ligament (OSL) rupture facilitates hemostasis but may also have adverse effects. Given the importance of minimizing the surgical stress response, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of OSL rupture in 20 healthy bitches undergoing elective open OVH; a celiotomy via the ventral midline was performed, and hemostasis achieved using bipolar coagulation, either with OSL rupture (OSL-R) or without (OSL-NR). Pain was assessed over 24 h post-surgery using the Visual Analogue Scale and the Short Form of the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale.

Prevalence of Lower Back Pain and Risk Factors in Equestrians: A Systematic Review.

Sports (Basel)

December 2024

Escola Superior de Biociências de Elvas, Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre, 7300-110 Portalegre, Portugal.

This systematic review aimed to determine the prevalence of lower back pain (LBP) in equestrian athletes (EAs) and identify associated risk factors. Following the PRISMA guidelines, observational studies published between 2004 and 2024 in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German were included. The review identified relevant studies through the Web of Science, EBSCO, MEDLINE, and SCOPUS (last search performed on 30 October 2024), yielding 14 studies with a total of 4527 participants.

Biomimetic Proteoglycans for Intervertebral Disc (IVD) Regeneration.

Biomimetics (Basel)

November 2024

Spine Service & Spine Labs, St George & Sutherland School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medicine, University of New South Wales, Kogarah, NSW 2217, Australia.

Intervertebral disc degeneration, which leads to low back pain, is the most prevalent musculoskeletal condition worldwide, significantly impairing quality of life and imposing substantial socioeconomic burdens on affected individuals. A major impediment to the development of any prospective cell-driven recovery of functional properties in degenerate IVDs is the diminishing IVD cell numbers and viability with ageing which cannot sustain such a recovery process. However, if IVD proteoglycan levels, a major functional component, can be replenished through an orthobiological process which does not rely on cellular or nutritional input, then this may be an effective strategy for the re-attainment of IVD mechanical properties.

Oral cavity cancer, a subtype of head and neck cancer, is one of the most common malignancies globally. This study assessed the influence of health system affiliation and pain manifestation on the risk of advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) in a Latin American population. In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed medical records from 2015 to 2016, including data from the past 19 years, of 233 patients with OCSCC treated at a public hospital in Medellín, Colombia.
