DNA-based prediction of externally visible characteristics (EVC) with SNPs is one of the research areas of interest in the forensic field. Based on a previous study performing GWAS on facial traits in a Korean population, herein, we present results stemming from GWA analysis with KoreanChip and novel genetic loci satisfying genome-wide significant level. We discovered a total of 20 signals and 12 loci were found to have novel associations with facial traits, including six loci located in intergenic regions and six loci located at UBE2O, HECTD2, CCDC108, TPK1, FCN2, and FRMPD1. Additionally, we performed a polygenic score analysis for 33 distance-related traits in facial phenotyping and determined genetic relationships between facial traits and SNPs using the GCTA program. The results of the current study offer an understanding of how facial morphology is influenced by complex genetic structures and provide insights into forensic investigation and population genetics.

Background: The medial epicanthal fold is a common ethnic trait in East Asian faces, and there is a significant demand for its correction for cosmetic reasons. Numerous epicanthoplasty techniques have been proposed; however, visible scarring and unnatural canthal shapes have been challenges. This study aimed to introduce a simpler approach for medial epicanthoplasty to address these issues and evaluate its outcomes.

A new sexual selection pattern in a frog () with ultrasonic communication.

Proc Biol Sci

January 2025

Collaborative Innovation Center of Recovery and Reconstruction of Degraded Ecosystem in Wanjiang Basin Co-founded by Anhui Province and Ministry of Education, Provincial Key Laboratory of Biotic Environment and Ecological Safety in Anhui, School of Ecology and Environment, Anhui Normal University, Wuhu 241000, China.

The current study has revealed a unique sexual selection pattern in , a species renowned for its ultrasonic communication, which differs from the patterns observed in other anuran taxa. Typically, females listen to male vocalizations and exhibit phonotaxis towards preferred traits for mate selection. In contrast, female do not actively approach displaying males for mate selection; instead, they use courtship calls to attract potential mates and incite male competition for access to them.

Hormetic response to pesticides in diapausing bees.

Biol Lett

January 2025

Department of Entomology, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA.

Pollinators face declines and diversity loss associated with multiple stressors, particularly pesticides. Most pollination services are provided by annual bees that undergo winter diapause, and many common pesticides are highly soluble in water and move through soil and plants where bees hibernate and feed, yet the effects of pesticides on pollinators' diapause survival and performance are poorly understood. Pesticides may have complex effects in bees, and some were shown to induce hormetic effects on various traits characterized by high-dose inhibition coupled with low-dose stimulation.

Myeloid malignancies include various types of cancers that arise from abnormal development or proliferation of myeloid cells within the bone marrow. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell treatments, which show great potential for B cell and plasma cell cancers, face major challenges when used for myeloid malignancies. CAR natural killer (NK) cell-based immunotherapy encounters several challenges in treating myeloid cancers, including: (1) poor gene transfer efficiency and expansion platforms in vitro, (2) limited proliferation and persistence in vivo, (3) antigenic heterogeneity, and (4) an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment.

Wild solitary bees face a host of challenges from the simplification of landscapes and biodiversity loss to invasive species and urbanization. Pollinator researchers and restoration workers thus far gave much attention to increase flower cover to reduce the impact of these anthropogenic pressures. Over 30% of bee species need nonfloral resources such as leaves and resin for their survival and reproduction.
