Article Synopsis
  • PFAS, or 'forever chemicals,' are highly stable environmental pollutants used in many consumer products, making them resistant to degradation and harmful to ecosystems.
  • Research using zebrafish determined that the PFAS alternative NBP2 is more genotoxic and cytotoxic than PFOS, with significant DNA damage observed in fish exposed to these substances.
  • The study found that exposure to PFAS led to increased oxidative stress indicators, such as reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, demonstrating the cytotoxic effects of these chemicals on aquatic life.

The history of liver surgery is a tale of progressive resolution of issues presenting one after another from ancient times to the present days when dealing with liver ailments. The perfect knowledge of human liver anatomy and physiology and the development of a proper liver resective surgery require time and huge efforts and, mostly, the study and research of giants of their own times, whose names are forever associated with anatomical landmarks, thorough descriptions, and surgical approaches. The control of parenchymal bleeding after trauma and during resection is the second issue that surgeons have to resolve.

A Landmark Paper That Introduced Proteasome Inhibition in Myeloma.

Cancer Res

October 2023

Department of Medical Oncology & Hematology, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The ongoing therapeutic revolution in multiple myeloma care can be traced to the turn of the millennium with the unanticipated discovery in 1999 that the cereblon binding small molecule thalidomide had profound clinical effectiveness and, simultaneously, the emergence of a new class of targeted therapies inhibiting the proteasome, both of which ultimately target ubiquitinated protein degradation. These contemporaneous discoveries forever changed the landscape of multiple myeloma care, substantially extending survival. Foreshadowing this seismic change, Nobel Prize winning work on the proteasome ubiquitin pathway had stimulated the development of highly specific proteasome inhibitor small molecules, particularly PS-341 (later named bortezomib).

Eponyms of Upper Extremity Surgical Approaches: A Historical Perspective.

J Hand Surg Am

November 2023

Cleveland Clinic Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH.

Numerous eponymous surgical approaches are used in the treatment of upper extremity pathology, especially in the trauma setting. Knowledge of anatomy and planes is critical to maximize visualization, achieve anatomic reduction, and avoid iatrogenic injury to critical neurovascular structures. Understanding the history of these commonly used eponymous upper extremity approaches (Kaplan, Kocher, Boyd, Thompson, and Henry) provides a humanistic perspective of each of these surgeons' narratives, which shaped their description of anatomic approaches that have forever changed the course of hand and upper extremity surgeries, providing greater means and possibilities to treat our patients.
