In this paper, several binary and ternary metastable intermixed nanocomposites Al/CuO, Al/PVDF, CuO/PVDF, and Al/CuO/PVDF have been prepared by simple mechanical mixing and ball milling followed by spray drying methods. In this way, the interfacial structure could be well tuned and compared in terms of reactivity. The nonisothermal DSC curves results showed that the exothermic reaction of Al/CuO/PVDF could be divided into three steps. In addition, it has been shown that for the same formulation, the reaction efficiency, pressurization capacity, and thermal reactivity are greatly dependent on the interfacial structure. As a typical example, composite Al@PVDF/CuO, where Al is fully covered with PVDF, exhibited a higher energy release of 10.7 kJ·cm and pressurization rates of 22.79 MPa·s·g. The reaction between Al and PVDF has been facilitated in both extent of reaction and efficiency due to their intimate contact. Based on the thermal analysis, condensed combustion product analysis, and gaseous phase identification, the mutual reaction mechanisms of Al/CuO/PVDF have been proposed. The most likely reactions that occurred at each stage of the reaction are summarized, providing insight into the complicated underlying mechanisms. It shows that the regulation of energy release rates and improved efficiency could be easily realized by predesigned interfacial structures.

Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) has been used as a bone replacement material due to its higher bone affinity. However, the mechanism of affinity has not been clarified. Since the 100 crystalline plane of OCP is closely involved in the biological reactions during osteogenesis, it is important to expose the 100 crystalline plane of OCP to the biological fluid to precisely measure the interfacial reactions.

Highly printable, strong, and ductile ordered intermetallic alloy.

Nat Commun

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Ordered intermetallic alloys are renowned for their impressive mechanical, chemical, and physical properties, making them appealing for various fields. However, practical applications of them have long been severely hindered due to their severe brittleness and poor fabricability. It is difficult to fabricate such materials into components with complex geometries through traditional subtractive manufacturing methods.

The interfacial mechanical characteristics of sandwich structures are crucial in defining the comprehensive mechanical performance of the whole structure. Nevertheless, in practical applications, the interface often emerges as the weakest segment due to potential defects in the interface of porous metal sandwich plates (PMSP). This study aims to explore the regulatory mechanisms influencing the mechanical characteristics of nano-SiO-reinforced aluminum foam sandwich structure (AFS) interfaces and to propose an effective strategy to achieve AFS interfaces with superior and stable mechanical properties.

The objective of the present work was to prepare hybrid epoxy composites with improved mechanical and thermal properties. The simultaneous use of two different modifiers in an epoxy resin was motivated by the expected occurrence of synergistic effects on the performance properties of the matrix. Such a hybrid composite can be used in more severe conditions and/or in broader application areas.
