As part of an on-going programme of development of an aniline synthesis catalyst suitable for operation at elevated temperatures, the geometry of the adsorption complex for nitrobenzene on a 5 wt% Pd/AlO catalyst is investigated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. an appreciation of the reduced site symmetry resulting from adsorption, application of the metal surface selection rule, and observation of in-plane modes only, the adsorption complex (Pd-nitrobenzene) at 28 °C is assigned as occurring vertically or tilted with respect to the metal surface, adopting () symmetry. Moreover, adsorption occurs a single Pd-O bond. Single molecule DFT calculations and simulated IR spectra assist vibrational assignments but indicate a parallel adsorption geometry to be energetically favourable. The contradiction between calculated and observed structures is attributed to the DFT calculations corresponding to an isolated molecule adsorption complex, while IR spectra relate to multi molecule adsorption that is encountered during sustained catalytic turnover. Residual hydrogen from the catalyst reduction stage leads to aniline formation on the Pd surface at low nitrobenzene coverages but, on increasing nitrobenzene exposure, the aniline is forced on to the alumina support. A reaction scheme is proposed whereby the nitrobenzene adsorption geometry is inherently linked to the high aniline selectivity observed for Pd/AlO catalysts.

The diffusion motions of individual polymer aggregates in disordered porous media were visualized using the single-particle tracking (SPT) method because the motions inside porous media play important roles in various fields of science and engineering. In the aggregates diffused on the surfaces of pores, continuous adsorption and desorption processes were observed. The relationship between the size of the aggregates and pore size was analysed based on diffusion coefficients, moment scaling spectrum (MSS) slope analysis, and diffusion anisotropy analysis.

An innovative core-shell covalent organic framework (COF), FeO@COF (ETTBA-ND), was synthesized through a facile and energy-efficient method. This adsorbent facilitated magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of six AFs prior to LC-MS/MS analysis, achieving one-step purification and enrichment in food matrices. The successful synthesis of the adsorbent was confirmed using various techniques, with adsorption capacities ranging from 46.

Seasonally inundated areas (SIA) within aquatic systems are characterized by elevated methylmercury (MeHg) production. Nevertheless, the response characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) quality in SIA sediments, including its molecular compositions and structure, and their impacts on the MeHg production are not yet fully understood. This research gap has been addressed through field investigations and microcosm experiments conducted in a metal-polluted plateau wetland.

Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are two trace metals that exhibit both limiting and toxic effects on aquatic microorganisms. However, in contrast to good knowledge of these metal interactions with individual microbial cultures, the biofilm, complex natural consortium of microorganisms, remains poorly understood with respect to its control on Cu and Zn in the aquatic environments. Towards constraining the magnitude and mechanisms of Cu and Zn isotope fractionation in the presence of phototrophic biofilms composed of different proportion of diatoms, green algae and cyanobacteria, we studied long-term growth in a rotating annular bioreactor and quantified the uptake of metals and their isotope fractionation at environmentally-relevant Cu and Zn concentrations.

The complex sorption mechanisms of carbon adsorbents for the diverse group of persistent, mobile, and potentially toxic contaminants (PMs or PMTs) present significant challenges in understanding and predicting adsorption behavior. While the development of quantitative predictive tools for adsorbent design often relies on extensive training data, there is a notable lack of experimental sorption data for PMs accompanied by detailed sorbent characterization. Rather than focusing on predictive tool development, this study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of sorption by applying data analysis methods to a high-quality dataset.
