Plastic waste management is a pressing ecological, social, and economic challenge. The saliva of the lepidopteran larvae is capable of oxidizing and depolymerizing polyethylene in hours at room temperature. Here, we analyze by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) 's saliva directly from the native source. The three-dimensional reconstructions reveal that the buccal secretion is mainly composed of four hexamerins belonging to the hemocyanin/phenoloxidase family, renamed Demetra, Cibeles, Ceres, and a previously unidentified factor termed Cora. Functional assays show that this factor, as its counterparts Demetra and Ceres, is also able to oxidize and degrade polyethylene. The cryo-EM data and the x-ray analysis from purified fractions show that they self-assemble primarily into three macromolecular complexes with striking structural differences that likely modulate their activity. Overall, these results establish the ground to further explore the hexamerins' functionalities, their role in vivo, and their eventual biotechnological application.

Background: Spatial-temporal control of mRNA translation in dendrites is important for synaptic plasticity. In response to pre-synaptic stimuli, local mRNA translation can be rapidly triggered near stimulated synapses to supply the necessary proteins for synapse maturation or elimination, and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) are responsible for proper localization of mRNAs in dendrites. Although is a robust technique for analyzing RNA localization in fixed neurons, live-cell imaging of RNA dynamics remains challenging.

Purpose: Successful regeneration of cranial defects necessitates the use of porous bone fillers to facilitate cell proliferation and nutrient diffusion. Open porous microspheres, characterized by their high specific surface area and osteo-inductive properties, offer an optimal microenvironment for cell ingrowth and efficient ossification, potentially accelerating bone regeneration.
Materials And Methods: An in vitro investigation was conducted to assess the physicochemical properties, porosity, and biocompatibility of PHA-nano-clay open porous microspheres.

Osteoarthritis (OA) has been the most common arthritis affecting public health all over the world. Previous experimental research reported that increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, along with decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol may be associated with increased ectopic bone formation and possible knee OA, while clinical evidence is absent. This study aimed to investigate the association between blood high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and OA.

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) and lignite, both rich in organic matter, present significant challenges for efficient conversion into clean energy. This study examined the anaerobic co-digestion of BPs and lignite under controlled laboratory conditions. The results demonstrated that the co-digestion of polylactic acid (PLA) and lignite (at a 1:2 mass ratio, with 5 g PLA and 10 g lignite as the model system) rapidly acclimated to the anaerobic environment, enhancing cumulative biogas production by 57 % compared to the mono-digestion of lignite alone.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are broadly utilized as plasticizers in industrial products, posing a significant threat to ecological security and human health. Lipase is a kind of green biocatalyst with the ability to degrade PAEs, but its application is limited due to its low stability and poor reusability. Herein, lipase from Candida rugosa (CRL) was immobilized into an organic ligand replacement MOFs (MAF-507) and cysteine modification and glutaraldehyde cross-linking were simultaneously performed to synthesize immobilized lipase (Cys-CRL@GA@MAF-507) using a one-pot method.
