Article Abstract

Granular convergence is a property of a granular pack as it is repeatedly sheared in a cyclic, quasistatic fashion, as the packing configuration changes via discrete events. Under suitable conditions the set of microscopic configurations encountered converges to a periodic sequence after sufficient shear cycles. Prior work modeled this evolution as the iteration of a pre-determined, random map from a set of discrete configurations into itself. Iterating such a map from a random starting point leads to similar periodic repetition. This work explores the effect of restricting the randomness of such maps in order to account for the local nature of the discrete events. The number of cycles needed for convergence shows similar statistical behavior to that of numerical granular experiments. The number of cycles in a repeating period behaves only qualitatively like these granular studies.

Self-assembly by anti-repellent structures for programming particles with momentum.

Nat Commun

Department of Electronics and Information Convergence Engineering, Kyung Hee University, Yongin-si, Republic of Korea.

Self-assembled configurations are versatile for applications in which liquid-mediated phenomena are employed to ensure that static or mild physical interactions between assembling blocks take advantage of local energy minima. For granular materials, however, a particle's momentum in air leads to random collisions and the formation of disordered phases, eventually producing jammed configurations when densely packed. Therefore, unlike fluidic self-assembly, the self-assembly of dry particles typically lacks programmability based on density and ordering symmetry and has thus been limited in applications.

Memetic ant colony optimization for multi-constrained cognitive diagnostic test construction.

Health Inf Sci Syst

Department of Psychology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510006 Guangdong China.

Purpose: Cognitive diagnostic tests (CDTs) assess cognitive skills at a more granular level, providing detailed insights into the mastery profile of test-takers. Traditional algorithms for constructing CDTs have partially addressed these challenges, focusing on a limited number of constraints. This paper intends to utilize a meta-heuristic algorithm to produce high-quality tests and handle more constraints simultaneously.

Interactions between top-down attention and bottom-up visceral inputs are assumed to produce conscious perceptions of interoceptive states, and while each process has been independently associated with aberrant interoceptive symptomatology in psychiatric disorders, the neural substrates of this interface are unknown. We conducted a preregistered functional neuroimaging study of 46 individuals with anxiety, depression, and/or eating disorders (ADE) and 46 propensity-matched healthy comparisons (HC), comparing their neural activity across two interoceptive tasks differentially recruiting top-down or bottom-up processing within the same scan session. During an interoceptive attention task, top-down attention was voluntarily directed towards cardiorespiratory or visual signals.

Article Synopsis
  • Material anisotropy due to crystal orientation significantly influences the mechanical and fracture properties of crystal materials, and the paper introduces an improved peridynamic model to analyze this effect on cubic crystals.
  • An innovative periodic function regarding crystal orientation simplifies the simulation process, allowing for accurate prediction of crack propagation without complex transformations.
  • The study reveals that variations in crystal orientation alter crack initiation and propagation paths, with particular notch shapes affecting fracture resistance, notably showing that semi-circular notches lead to slower crack initiation and propagation under tensile loading.
