Article Abstract

A linear 16-pole ion trap-based experimental setup has been designed, implemented, and characterized to investigate the photophysics of biomolecules in the gas phase. Electrospray ionization is employed to generate the ions in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure. The voltage configuration on the ion funnel, the ion optic device in the first vacuum interface, is used to control the energy of the ions. A home-built quadrupole mass-filter is utilized for the mass-selection of the ions of interest. A 16-pole ion trap designed and built in-house is implemented for ion trapping. The instrument's versatility and capability are showcased by demonstrating the fragmentation patterns of protonated and deprotonated tryptophan, as well as describing the photodetachment decay of deprotonated indole.

We report on the three-body reaction rate of C with H producing CH studied in a cryogenic 16-pole radio frequency ion trap. The reaction was measured in the temperature range from 10 to 28 K, where it was found to only take place via three-body collisions. The experimentally determined termolecular rate coefficient follows the form of with = 20 K, where = 8.

We have added a multipole ion trap to the existing photon-ion spectrometer at PETRA III (PIPE). Its hybrid structure combines a ring-electrode trap with a segmented 16-pole trap. The interaction of gases and ions with extreme ultraviolet radiation from the beamline P04 is planned to be investigated with the newly installed multipole trap.

Three-body reaction rates of Cl with H to form the weakly bound complex Cl(H) are measured between 10 and 26 K in a linear radio-frequency wire trap. Formation of larger clusters of the form Cl(H) are also observed. The three-body (or termolecular) rate coefficients follow the form , with = 1.

A sub-4 Kelvin radio frequency linear multipole wire trap.

Rev Sci Instrum

February 2021

Universität Innsbruck, Institut für Ionenphysik und Angewandte Physik, Technikerstraße 25/3, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria.

A linear cryogenic 16-pole wire ion trap has been developed and constructed for cryogenic ion spectroscopy at temperatures below 4 K. The trap is temperature-variable, can be operated with different buffer gases, and offers large optical access perpendicular to the ion beam direction. The housing geometry enables temperature measurement during radio frequency operation.
