AI Article Synopsis

  • A rare case of a submandibular gland epidermoid cyst in a 49-year-old female transformed into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is extremely uncommon and previously unreported in literature.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed through clinical examination, cytology, and imaging, followed by intraoperative frozen section and histopathological examination.
  • The patient underwent complete surgical excision with a clear margin and neck dissection, and there were no signs of recurrence during a one-year follow-up.

Article Abstract

Rationale: Submandibular gland epidermoid cyst is extremely rare and malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is even rarer. No such case report is published.

Patient Concerns: A 49-year-old female reported with a large, slowly growing left-sided neck swelling present for two years. Her primary concern was large swelling.

Diagnosis: Clinical finding, cytology and imaging were suggestive of 'Epidermoid Cyst of Submandibular Gland'. Intraoperative frozen section and post-operative definitive histopathological examination (HPE) revealed malignant transformation into SCC.

Treatment: In toto surgical excision was performed. Once the frozen section HPE confirmed transformation into SCC, clearance of 4-6 mm margin and modified supraomohyoid neck dissection was completed.

Outcome: No sign of recurrence on 1-year postoperative follow-up.

Take-away Lesson: This case is unique of its kind without any previous literature report. In case of large and rapidly growing submandibular gland lesion, possibility of malignant transformation should not be overruled.

The study aimed to investigate oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) diagnosed in an Oral Pathology service in southern Brazil over a span of 56 years and to assess the factors influencing their severity and outcomes. A retrospective analysis of histopathological records from 1965 to 2021 was performed. Lesions diagnosed as leukoplakia, erythroplakia, leukoerythroplakia, or actinic cheilitis were included.

GATA2 deficiency is an autosomal dominant germline disorder of immune dysfunction and bone marrow failure with a high propensity for leukemic transformation. While sequencing studies have identified several secondary mutations thought to contribute to malignancy, the mechanisms of disease progression have been difficult to identify due to a lack of disease-specific experimental models. Here, we describe a murine model of one of the most common GATA2 mutations associated with leukemic progression in GATA2 deficiency, Gata2.

Although pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands are benign tumors, they can metastasize to distant organs without evidence of malignant transformation. We describe FDG PET/CT finding in a case of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma in the right ilium occurring 22 years after initial surgical resection of a lip pleomorphic adenoma. On FDG PET/CT, the iliac metastasis appeared as an expansile osteolytic lesion with heterogeneous activity.
