We report on the efficient collimation of soft X-rays with an energy of 277 eV by a halved polycapillary lens (PCL), made of borosilicate glass. Using electron-excited, micro fluorescence emission in the focus of the PCL, experiments reveal an angular divergence of (6.9 ± 0.2) mrad in the far field of the emitted beam. For a source of ≈5m in size, that result is confirmed by simulations, obtained with a newly developed ray tracing code. An analytical fit model is proposed and applied to characterize the evolution of the measured as well as calculated, three-dimensional (3-D) intensity distribution. The photon flux density in a free-space propagation distance of (0.4 - 0.9) m from the PCL is enhanced by a factor of ≈(30 - 90) in comparison to the direct, not collimated radiation, as it is detected through a mm-sized transmission slit. Our findings could help to establish the halved PCL as a versatile tool in the table-top metrology of optical elements, such as mirrors and gratings for soft X-rays.

Various new dental treatment methods have been introduced in dental clinics, and many new materials have been used in recent years for dental treatments. Dentistry is divided into several specialties, each offering unique treatments, such as endodontics, implantology, oral surgery, and orthodontics. CT and MR images after dental treatment reveal a variety of hard- and soft-tissue changes and dental materials, which often cause image artifacts.

As photobiomodulation is growing in the dental field the aim of this prospective, two-arm clinical trial was to assess the radiographic changes for chronic periapical bone lesions related to mandibular molars after primary root canal therapy with or without applying Diode laser on soft tissue. The samples were randomly divided into a Laser group and a mock laser (ML) group. Preoperative CBCT images were compared 12 months later with postoperative CBCT to gauge the changes in the volume of the bony lesion by two observers.

A boy in his middle childhood presented with a gradually enlarging, mildly tender swelling in the left frontal region, noticed after minor trauma. Skull radiograph and non-enhanced CT revealed a diffuse sclerotic lesion involving the left frontal bone and overlying subcutaneous soft tissue, suggestive of an intraosseous haemangioma. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed an expansile, hypointense lesion in the frontal bone on the left side with enhancing extraosseous components and a small extra-axial cyst.

For studies of the evolution of vertebrate brain anatomy and potentially associated behaviours, reconstructions of digital brain endocasts from computed tomography scans have revolutionized our capacity to collect neuroanatomical data. However, measurements from digital endocasts must be validated as reflecting actual brain anatomy, which is difficult because the collection of soft tissue information through histology is laborious and time-consuming. In birds, the reliability of digital endocast measurements as volume proxies for the two largest brain regions-the telencephalon and cerebellum-remains to be validated despite their use as proxies, e.
