Odonata species live through their immature development in aquatic habitats, where the eggs are adapted to survive the initial stages. The survival of the eggs is linked to the layers that make up the eggshell. These layers are common to all odonate species, but show variations among them, depending on the oviposition method. For example, endophytic eggs (laid in plant tissues) and exophytic eggs (laid on the water surface) have different morphologies, which may reveal egg adaptations to environmental conditions and stresses. The differences in the egg morphologies could be shown in the length of the egg layers, their histochemical composition, and in the ultrastructure. The histochemical composition can reveal several features that could lead us to a better understanding of its function, for example, how glycoproteins and total proteins could regulate the humidity and water retention in the eggs according to the environments in which the eggs are placed.

Malaria continues to be a major public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions. , a key laboratory model for malaria research, plays a critical role in the study of vector-parasite interactions. Although vector life traits and environmental factors such as age and resource availability can influence the transmission potential of mosquitoes for parasites, the impact of different adult diets on their survival and reproductive fitness remains underexplored.

The rice leaf folder is an important migratory pest in Asia. Although this pest possesses diverse bacterial communities in its gut, functions of these bacteria in modulating host fitness, including development durations, pupal weight, adult longevity, and fecundity, remain unknown. We isolated gut bacteria from field-collected larvae using a culture-dependent method and identified 15 bacterial isolates.

Alternative splicing of (DEAD-box helicase 4), a key germline marker gene, has been reported to generate sex-specific transcripts in zebrafish gonads. The biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of the ovary-specific transcript () during oogenesis remain unclear. In this study, we found that mutants, in which was specifically deleted, had enlarged ovaries but laid fewer eggs, along with having a lower fertilization rate compared to WT controls.

(Walker), a significant migratory pest in many Asian countries, can cause severe damage to wheat crops. Understanding whether wild oat can serve as an alternate host is important for informing predictive models of infestation levels in wheat fields and can improve pest and weed management strategies. We first conducted both choice and no-choice experiments and found that readily laid eggs on both wheat and wild oat, with no significant oviposition preference.

Background: Transgenic plants expressing proteins that target the eggs of the ubiquitous plant pest Bemisia tabaci (whitefly) could be an effective insecticide strategy. Two approaches for protein delivery are assessed using the mCherry reporter gene in transgenic tomato plants, while accommodating autofluorescence in both the plant, phloem-feeding whitefly and pedicle-attached eggs.
Results: Both transgenic strategies were segregated to homozygous genotype using digital PCR.
