Zinc oxide/Curcumin (Zn(CUR)O) nanocomposites were prepared hydrothermal treatment of Zn(NO) in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine as a stabilizing agent and CUR as a bioactive element. Three ZnO : CUR ratios were investigated, namely 57 : 43 (Zn(CUR)O-A), 60 : 40 (Zn(CUR)O-B) and 81 : 19 (Zn(CUR)O-C), as assessed by thermogravimetric analyses, with an average hydrodynamic diameter of nanoaggregates in the range of 223 to 361 nm. The interaction of CUR with ZnO hydroxyl and ketoenol groups (as proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses) was found to significantly modify the key properties of ZnO nanoparticles with the obtainment of a bilobed shape (as shown by scanning electron microscopy), and influenced the growth process of the composite nanoparticles as indicated by the varying particle sizes determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The efficacy of Zn(CUR)O as anticancer agents was evaluated on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cells, obtaining a synergistic activity with a cell viability depending on the CUR amount within the nanocomposite. Finally, the determination of reactive oxygen species production in the presence of Zn(CUR)O was used as a preliminary evaluation of the mechanism of action of the nanocomposites.

The broader soil bacterial community responses at ecotoxicologically relevant levels of nano ZnO (nZnO) focussing on co-selection of antibiotic resistance (AR) were investigated. nZnO imposed a stronger influence than the bulk counterpart (bZnO) on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with multidrug resistance (MDR) systems being predominant (63 % of total ARGs). Proliferation of biomarker ARGs especially for last resort antibiotic like vancomycin was observed and Streptomyces hosted multiple ARGs.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has earned a well-defined place among biopolymers due to its unique physicochemical properties. Unfortunately, native BC lacks antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. To address this limitation, many BC-based nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties have been developed, primarily for applications in the biomedical field, but also for use in food packaging.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the effects of curcumin and zinc compounds on the quality of ram sperm after thawing following cryopreservation.
  • Various concentrations of curcumin, zinc chloride, zinc oxide nanoparticles, and Curc-loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles were tested using a Tris-base extender on ram semen samples.
  • Results indicated that 1 µg/mL of Curc-co-ZnO-NPs significantly improved sperm viability, motility, and integrity, while reducing malondialdehyde levels and abnormalities after thawing.

Chronic wound healing is a common clinical challenge, characterized by bacterial infection, protracted inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and insufficient neovascularization. Nanozymes have emerged as a promising solution for treating skin wounds due to their antioxidant, antibacterial, and angiogenic properties. In recent years, combining nanozymes with hydrogels to jointly promote wound healing has attracted increasing research interest.
