Non-coding RNAs, including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), together with transcription factors, are critical pre-, co-, and post-transcriptional regulators. In addition to their criteria as ideal biomarkers, they have great potential in disease prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of complex diseases. Investigation of regulatory mechanisms in the context of bovine mastitis, as most common and economic disease in the dairy industry, to identify elements influencing the expression of candidate genes as key regulators of the mammary immune response is not yet fully understood. Transcriptome profiles (50 RNA-Seq and 50 miRNA-Seq samples) of bovine monocytes induced by Str. uberis were used for co-expression module detection and preservation analysis using the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) approach. Assigned mi-, lnc-, and m-modules used to construct the integrated regulatory networks and miRNA-lncRNA-mRNA regulatory sub-networks. Remarkably, we have identified 18 miRNAs, five lncRNAs, and seven TFs as key regulators of str. uberis-induced mastitis. Most of the genes introduced here, mainly involved in immune response, inflammation, and apoptosis, were new to mastitis. These findings may help to further elucidate the underlying mechanisms of bovine mastitis, and the discovered genes may serve as signatures for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is known for its virulence and zoonotic potential, infecting birds and mammals, thus raising public health concerns. Since 2021 its spread among birds has led to cross-species transmission causing epizootics among mammals, eventually impacting fur animal farms in Finland in 2023. To analyze the infectivity of the Finnish H5N1 isolates in human cells, representatives of diverse H5N1 isolates were selected based on the genetic differences, host animal species, and the year of occurrence.

The receptor for IgM has been identified a few years ago, but its expression by bovine mononuclear cells has not yet been studied. We used rabbit antibodies against bovine FcμR to begin to fill this gap. Anti-FcμR antibodies bound to B lymphocytes and monocytes, although less than to neutrophils.

Aims: To investigate the effect of injection of trace mineral supplement (TMS) 14-28 days before calving on white blood cell count (WBCC) and function, serum antioxidant capacity (SAC) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pasture-fed cattle after calving.
Methods: On each of two South Island, seasonally calving, pastoral dairy farms,1 month before dry-off, a random sample of 150 multiparous cows predicted to calve within 7 days of the herd's planned start of calving (PSC) were stratified on individual somatic cell count, age, breed and expected calving date. On each farm, 14-24 days before PSC, 60 selected cows were randomly assigned for TMS (Zn, Mn, Se, Cu) injection, and 60 were controls.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of stress challenge duration on metabolic, hematologic, and rumen fermentation parameters of beef steers. Thirty steers (416 ± 19 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design with 2 blocks and 3 treatments. Treatments were intravenous injection of (1) saline at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h ( = 10; control); (2) corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and vasopressin (VP) at 0 h and saline at 24, 48, and 72 h ( = 10; acute); or (3) CRH and VP at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h ( = 10; chronic).
