In this study, the effects of CO-activated/non-activated pyrochars (PCs) from cornstalk, cotton straw, and rice straw on anaerobic digestion (AD) performances and microbial characteristics were investigated. The maximum biogas production rate (2.2 L/L/d) with a methane content of 73% was obtained from the AD with CO-activated cotton straw PC. The activated PC mainly played a strengthening role in the early and middle stages of AD. Specifically, the cornstalk PC could greatly relieve acid inhibition, and cotton straw PC had a significantly positive effect on the regulation of ammonia nitrogen concentration. The rare genera like Verrucomicrobia had obvious differences among groups of AD with PCs. Regarding differential metabolites, cornstalk PC-N displayed a positive correlation with isoleucyl-alanine, while exhibiting a negative correlation with deoxyinosine, and the corresponding relative expression levels were + 3.0 and -2.4, respectively. Overall, gas-activated PCs could promote methane production and affect the composition of microbial community.

Laccases are multi-copper oxidases that play an important role in the biodegradation of phenolic compounds, lignin, dye, and wastes. Here, we report the screening of potential laccase-producing indigenous bacterial isolates and subsequent optimization of laccase production using crop residues as cheap supplementary energy sources. Among 16 bacterial isolates, seven were selected based on the appearance of reddish-brown bacterial colonies and guaiacol oxidation assay after 10 days of incubation at 37 °C.

Changes in selenium bioavailability in selenium-enriched paddy soils induced by different water management and organic amendments.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how water management techniques (continuous flooding vs. alternating wet and dry) and the use of organic waste (cotton straw biochar and sheep manure) affect selenium bioavailability in Se-enriched paddy soils.
  • A 10 g·kg application of sheep manure was found to be the most effective in increasing selenium bioavailability under alternating wet and dry conditions, while biochar reduced it.
  • The research highlights that these treatments also significantly influenced soil chemistry and bacterial communities, linking specific bacteria types to bioavailable selenium levels, and offers insights for improving agricultural practices in selenium-rich soils.

Yunnan Agricultural University, The Key Lab of Plant Pathology of Yunnan Province, kunming, Yunnan, China;

Article Synopsis
  • * In July 2023, symptoms of Rice Sheath Blight were identified in Yongfu County, Guangxi, with affected leaves showing dark green spots, expanding lesions, and color changes from straw-yellow to brown.
  • * Research involved collecting infected leaf samples, disinfecting them, culturing on Potato Dextrose Agar, and analyzing the fungal characteristics, confirming the presence of Rhizoctonia solani through distinct morphological traits and the anastomosis group classification.

Background: Phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are vital in converting insoluble phosphorus into a soluble form that plants can readily absorb and utilize in soil. While previous studies have mainly focused on the extracellular secretion of microorganisms, few have explored the intricate intracellular metabolic processes involved in PSB-mediated phosphorus solubilization.

Results: Here, we uncovered that Ca(PO) could serve as a source of insoluble phosphorus for the PSB, Pseudomonas sp.

The high water consumption in agriculture has led to an obvious water crisis in this sector, and the use of unconventional water sources, especially agricultural drains, is considered necessary. For this purpose, the present study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of biological filters with different types of substrates for treating agricultural wastewater in Khuzestan province, located in the south of Iran, to use receptive resources and reuse them in agriculture. Next, the efficiency of four types of biological filters for treating agricultural drainage water with different retention times was evaluated.
