Currently, the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has mainly been focused on the extraction of precious metals, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel from cathodes, while the waste graphite anode has been overlooked due to its low-cost production and abundant resources reserve. However, there are enormous potential value and pollution risk in the view of graphite recycling. Thus, we propose an original method to prepare expanded graphite (EG) as new anode material generated from waste graphite in LIBs which integrates the oxidation and purification in one-step. By regulating the oxidizability of potassium hypermanganate in the sulfur-phosphorus mixed acid system, the expansion of graphite and removal of impurities are realized simultaneously and thoroughly. As anticipated, the shortening of preparation process and purification procedure can also reduce the generation of polluting substances and production cost. It displays excellent electrochemical performance (reversible capacity of 435.8 mAh·g at 0.1C and long-term cycling property of 370 mAh·g at 1C after 1000 cycles), which is even higher than that of pristine commercial graphite. This delicate strategy of high-performance expanded graphite recycling achieves the integration of purification and value-added processes, providing the instructive guide to regenerate industrial-grade anode materials for the increasing LIBs demand in the future.

Radiocarbon analysis of nuclear waste produced in nuclear facilities lacks fast, in situ detection methods. Moreover, the amount of radiocarbon desorbing from graphitic waste is not well known. In this study, we demonstrate the use of mid-infrared cavity ring-down spectroscopy combined with an automatic sample processing unit as a method to examine radiocarbon concentration in three types of nuclear waste: spent ion-exchange resin, graphite, and graphite outgassing in sealed storage crates.

Nanoscale FeWO/BiVO heterojunctions were directly grown on the graphite fiber felt (GF) with good conductivity to construct a FeWO/BiVO @GF solar photo-Fenton like wastewater treatment system. The removal effect of COD from phenolic wastewater and the mechanism of synergistic improvement of wastewater treatment efficiency by this system were investigated. The FeWO/BiVO heterojunction prepared by hydrothermal method exhibited higher photoelectric conversion efficiency and solar light utilization rate, thus endowing FeWO/BiVO with excellent solar-Fenton like reaction activity.

Spinless systems exhibit unique topological characteristics compared to spinful ones, stemming from their distinct algebra. Without chiral interactions typically linked to spin, an intriguing yet unexplored interplay between topological and structural chirality may be anticipated. Here we discover spinless topological chiralities solely from structural chiralities that lie in the 3D spatial patterning of structureless units, exemplified using two types of twisted graphite systems.

A novel metal-free perylene-functionalized graphite adsorbent for efficient antibiotic removal from wastewater.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, Shahrekord University, P.O. Box 115, Shahrekord, Iran.

Adsorption remains a widely utilized and effective technique for removing chemical contaminants from polluted water, and novel adsorbents are currently in the process of being developed. The presence of antibiotics residues in aqueous effluents is a potential concern due to their potential adverse effects on living organisms. In this work, perylene tetracarboxylic acid-functionalized expanded graphite (PTCA-EG) was synthesized as a metal-free adsorbent and its potential for efficient treatment of contaminated wastewater with cefalexin (CLX) antibiotic was studied.
