The retinoic acid (RA) pathway was shown to be important for tooth development in mammals, and suspected to play a key role in tooth evolution in teleosts. The general modalities of development of tooth and "tooth-like" structures (collectively named odontodes) seem to be conserved among all jawed vertebrates, both with regard to histogenesis and genetic regulation. We investigated the putative function of RA signalling in tooth and scale initiation in a cartilaginous fish, the small-spotted catshark . To address this issue, we identified the expression pattern of genes from the RA pathway during both tooth and scale development and performed functional experiments by exposing small-spotted catshark embryos to exogenous RA or an inhibitor of RA synthesis. Our results showed that inhibiting RA synthesis affects tooth but not caudal primary scale development while exposure to exogenous RA inhibited both. We also showed that the reduced number of teeth observed with RA exposure is probably due to a specific inhibition of tooth bud initiation while the observed effects of the RA synthesis inhibitor is related to a general delay in embryonic development that interacts with tooth development. This study provides data complementary to previous studies of bony vertebrates and support an involvement of the RA signalling pathway toolkit in odontode initiation in all jawed vertebrates. However, the modalities of RA signalling may vary depending on the target location along the body, and depending on the species lineage.

Small Leucine-Rich Proteoglycans (SLRPs) are a major family of vertebrate proteoglycans. In bony vertebrates, SLRPs have a variety of functions from structural to signaling and are found in extracellular matrices, notably in skeletal tissues. However, there is little or no data on the diversity, function and expression patterns of SLRPs in cartilaginous fishes, which hinders our understanding of how these genes evolved with the diversification of vertebrates, in particular regarding the early events of whole genome duplications that shaped gnathostome and cyclostome genomes.

Cartilaginous fishes (chondrichthyans: chimaeras and elasmobranchs -sharks, skates and rays) hold a key phylogenetic position to explore the origin and diversifications of jawed vertebrates. Here, we report and integrate reference genomic, transcriptomic and morphological data in the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula to shed light on the evolution of sensory organs. We first characterise general aspects of the catshark genome, confirming the high conservation of genome organisation across cartilaginous fishes, and investigate population genomic signatures.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have recently been proposed to be more relevant in driving population changes than the continuous increase in average temperatures associated with climate change. The causal processes underpinning MHW effects in sharks are unclear but may be linked to changes in fitness caused by physiological trade-offs that influence the immune response. Considering the scarcity of data about the immune response of sharks under anomalous warming events, the present study analyzed several fitness indices and characterized the immune response (in the blood, epigonal organ, liver, spleen and intestine) of temperate adult small-spotted catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula) after a 30 day exposure to a category II MHW.
