AI Article Synopsis

  • Verbena officinalis is a traditional Chinese medicine known for treating rheumatism and bronchitis, and recent research identified four new triterpenes (officinalisoids A-D) and 33 known compounds from its aerial parts.
  • The chemical structures of the new compounds were analyzed using advanced techniques like NMR and spectroscopy.
  • Biological tests showed that one of the compounds (30) has potential anti-inflammatory effects, while another (12) exhibits moderate activity against the dengue virus.

Article Abstract

Verbena officinalis is used as a Chinese folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatism and bronchitis. Herein, four undescribed triterpenes, officinalisoids A-D (1-4), together with thirty-three known compounds (5-37) were isolated from the aerial parts of V. officinalis. The chemical structures of the new compounds were determined by spectrometric data interpretation using NMR, HRESIMS, IR and UV spectroscopy. Biological evaluation results revealed that compound 30 exhibited potential anti-inflammatory activity with IC value of 6.07 μM (CC > 50 μM) and compound 12 showed moderate anti-dengue virus activity with the IC value of 24.55 μM (CC > 50 μM).

Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Plant Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Taizhou University, Taizhou 318000, China.

A comprehensive phytochemical investigation of the twigs/leaves and flower buds of , a rare deciduous shrub native to China, led to the isolation of 39 structurally diverse compounds. These compounds include 11 iridoid glycosides (- and -), 20 triterpenoids (, , and -), and 8 phenylpropanoids (-). Among these, amabiliosides A () and B () represent previously undescribed bis-iridoid glycosides, while amabiliosides C () and D () feature a unique bis-iridoid-monoterpenoid indole alkaloid scaffold with a tetrahydro--carboline-5-carboxylic acid moiety.

In this study, incartrilactones A (1) and B (2), two previously undescribed schinortriterpenoids (SNTs) possessing an unprecedented 5/5/6/5/7/5-fused hexacyclic skeleton, together with one previously undescribed (3) and one known (4) analogues, were isolated from the stems of Schisandra incarnata Stapf. Their structures with absolute configurations were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, X-ray crystallography and electronic circular dichroism calculation. Compounds 1 and 2 represent the first class of 14,15-seco-15,17-cyclolancifoartane-type SNTs containing the unusual linkage of ‒C14‒C16‒C13‒C17‒C15.

Four undescribed cytochalasins (1-4), three undescribed orsellinic acid derivatives (5-7) and two known metabolites including methyl lecanorate (8) and methyl orsellinate (9) were isolated from the solid-state cultivation of a soil-derived fungus Trichocladium asperum SQ2-3 collected in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of NMR (1D and 2D) and mass spectrometry data. The absolute configurations of 1-7 were assigned by a combination of the modified Mosher's method, microscale derivatization and Mo(OAc)-induced circular dichroism experiment.
