Compact Michelson interferometers are well positioned to replace existing displacement sensors in the readout of seismometers and suspension systems, such as those used in contemporary gravitational-wave detectors. Here, we continue our previous investigation of a customised compact displacement sensor built by SmarAct that operates on the principle of deep frequency modulation. The focus of this paper is the linearity of this device and its subsequent impact on sensitivity. We show the three primary sources of nonlinearity that arise in the sensor: residual ellipticity, intrinsic distortion of the Lissajous figure, and distortion caused by exceeding the velocity limit imposed by the demodulation algorithm. We verify the theoretical models through an experimental demonstration, where we show the detrimental impact that these nonlinear effects have on device sensitivity. Finally, we simulate the effect that these nonlinearities are likely to have if implemented in the readout of the Advanced LIGO suspensions and show that the noise from nonlinearities should not dominate across the key sub-10 Hz frequency band.

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) records coaxial holograms for wide-field 3D imaging with incoherent light, but its temporal phase-shifting strategy makes dynamic imaging challenging. Here, we present a compact, portable single-shot mirrored phase-shifting (SSPMS) module that can be easily integrated into the FINCH system, achieving secondary modulation of self-interference beams to enable the simultaneous acquisition of four phase-shift holograms in a single exposure. Compared with previously reported methods that use diffraction gratings to spatially separate self-interference beams at specific angles, this module duplicates a laterally shifted mirrored beam using a simply modified Michelson interferometer, so the phase-shifting holograms obtained via this module are free from optical aberrations or higher-order diffracted light noises.

In this work, we propose and demonstrate experimentally a compact technique for generating cylindrical vector beams based on a Michelson interferometer and a π-astigmatic mode converter. The latter is required to invert the topological charge of higher-order Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beams. Our proposed technique generalizes the use of astigmatic mode conversion, commonly associated only with scalar beams, to vector beams with a non-homogeneous polarization distribution.

Actin mediates insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells through remodeling. Hampered by limited resolution, previous studies have offered an ambiguous depiction as depolymerization and repolymerization. We report the in situ structure of actin remodeling in INS-1E β-cells during glucose-stimulated insulin secretion at nanoscale resolution.

Over the last 20 years, optical fiber-based devices have been exploited extensively in the field of biochemical sensing, with applications in many specific areas such as the food processing industry, environmental monitoring, health diagnosis, bioengineering, disease diagnosis, and the drug industry due to their compact, label-free, and highly sensitive detection. The selective and accurate detection of biochemicals is an essential part of biosensing devices, which is to be done through effective functionalization of highly specific recognition agents, such as enzymes, DNA, receptors, etc., over the transducing surface.

We present a cost-effective, compact foot-print, and open-source Raspberry Pi-based widefield imaging system. The compact nature allows the system to be used for close-proximity dual-brain cortical mesoscale functional-imaging to simultaneously observe activity in two head-fixed animals in a staged social touch-like interaction. We provide all schematics, code, and protocols for a rail system where head-fixed mice are brought together to a distance where the macrovibrissae of each mouse make contact.
