The mechanical strength of wood from Scots pine (), European larch (), and Norway spruce () was studied using static compression tests. The material was exposed under constant soaking in water with salinity of 7‱. The liquid mix was prepared according to a value roughly equivalent to the average salinity along the entire length of the Baltic Sea. The mechanical strength and quality of the raw material were determined using a sea salt saturation test, which determined the adhesion of the raw material to the extrusion process (permissible stress). An investigation was conducted to determine the physicochemical parameters of the material that was tested. It was investigated how much mineral compounds were absorbed over four cycles lasting a total of six weeks during the test. According to the statistical analysis, the chemical composition of wood and the presence of salts and mineral compounds correlated with its mechanical strength. An important part of the study focused on examining the factors affecting the construction of coniferous wood structures. The preparation of the raw material correctly can provide information on how the material can be protected during exposure to specific environmental conditions for longer.

Improving the regeneration of the tendon-bone interface (TBI) helps to decrease the risk of rotator cuff retears after repair surgeries. Unfortunately, the lack of inherent healing capacity of the TBI, insufficient mechanical properties, and abnormal and persistent inflammation during repair are the key factors leading to suboptimal healing of the rotator cuff. Therefore, a high-strength rotator cuff repair material capable of regulating the unbalanced immune response and enhancing the regeneration of the TBI is urgently needed.

Blood-contacting medical devices can easily trigger immune responses, leading to thrombosis and hyperblastosis. Constructing microtexture that provides efficient antithrombotic and rapid reendothelialization performance on complex curved surfaces remains a pressing challenge. In this work, we present a robust and regular micronano binary texture on the titanium surface, characterized by exceptional mechanical strength and precisely controlled wettability to achieve excellent hemocompatibility.

The additive manufacturing of hardmetals has attracted great attention recently but faces significant challenges in low printing resolution and low mechanical strength. Herein, the fabrication of hardmetal parts with complex structures and high surface quality by vat photopolymerization assisted with a sintering process has been achieved. This was enabled by in situ polymerization-induced microencapsulation of WC powder, which simultaneously enhances the photocuring ability and sedimentation stability of the WC-Co slurry.

Traditionally, food packaging was used to extend the shelf life of food or to monitor its condition. Inspired by many biological structures found in nature, bio-inspired functional materials for bio-based food packaging have been shown to have significantly improved capabilities over traditional bio-based food packaging materials in various aspects and to attract consumers through novel freshness preservation features. This review synthesizes recent advances in bio-inspired bio-based food packaging materials that mimic the structure of natural organisms with specific functionalities, with examples of specific biomimetics in different enhancement areas.

Hydrogels are flexible materials characterized by a 3D network structure, which possess high water content and adjustable physicochemical properties. They have found widespread applications in tissue engineering, electronic skin, drug delivery, flexible sensors, and photothermal therapy. However, hydrogel networks often exhibit swelling behavior in aqueous environments, which can result in structural degradation and a loss of gel performance.
