Detection of Polonium-210 in Environmental, Biological and Food Samples: A Review.

Ingestion of polonium-210 from environmental media and food can cause serious health hazards (e.g., gastrointestinal symptoms, tumours, etc.) and has been a public health concern worldwide since the 2006 poisoning of Agent Litvinenko Po in Russia. With the development of uranium mining and applications of nuclear technology in recent decades, the radioactive hazards posed by Po to living organisms and the environment have become increasingly prominent. In order to strengthen the monitoring of environmental Po and protect both the environment and human health, a series of explorations on the methods of Po determination have been ongoing by researchers across the globe. However, previous reviews have focused on individual sample types and have not provided a comprehensive account of environmental, food, and biological samples that are closely related to human health. In this work, the sources, health hazards, chemical purification, and detection methods of trace Po in different sample types are systematically reviewed. In particular, the advantages and disadvantages of various pretreatment methods are compared, and relevant domestic and international standards are integrated, which puts forward a new direction for the subsequent establishment of rapid, simple, and efficient measurement methods.

An extensive study on Po was conducted at Castillos Lagoon, a shallow brackish lagoon on the east coast of Uruguay, aiming to determine the activity concentrations of Po in various compartments and to derive the activity fluxes among them. The activity concentration of Po was determined in water, sediments, six different species of fishes, crabs, shrimps, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Po was determined using alpha spectrometry, performing radiochemical separation and self-deposition on silver disc.

This study investigates the radiation dose that humans receive from naturally occurring uranium-series radionuclides, with a focus on alpha-emitting polonium-210 (Po), which has a half-life of 138.4 days. Polonium is efficiently absorbed by living organisms and is estimated to contribute approximately 7% of the total effective dose from ingested natural internal radiation.

The assessment of 210Po in agricultural soil matrices in different regions of Kerala and Karnataka was studied. The wet ash method was used to find the activity concentration of 210Po. The alpha activity was counted using a silver-activated zinc sulfide counter of 30% efficiency, and the activity was calculated.

Exposure to ionizing radiation inside houses, especially radionuclides of radon and its progeny, poses serious health risks that can be exacerbated when inhaled as a result of interaction with human lung tissue. Also, air ionization is mainly due to these radionuclides. Therefore, accurate measurements of radon activity concentrations and its short-lived progeny are required to assess dose and environmental pollution and estimate ionization rates in indoor environments.
