Acetic acid is a simple and universal compound found in various organisms. Recently, acetic acid was found to play an essential role in conferring tolerance to water deficit stress in plants. This novel mechanism of drought stress tolerance mediated by acetic acid via networks involving phytohormones, genes, and chromatin regulation has great potential for solving the global food crisis and preventing desertification caused by global warming. We highlight the functions of acetic acid in conferring tolerance to water deficit stress.

Complex transcription regulation of acidic chitinase suggests fine-tuning of digestive processes in Drosera binata.

Planta

January 2025

Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology, Plant Science and Biodiversity Center, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Akademicka 2, P. O. Box 39A, 950 07, Nitra, Slovak Republic.

DbChitI-3, Drosera binata's acidic chitinase, peaks at pH 2.5 from 15 °C to 30 °C. Gene expression is stimulated by polysaccharides and suppressed by monosaccharide digestion, implying a feedback loop in its transcriptional regulation.

Evaluation of the anti-cholelithiasis activity of vinegar-soaked Ficus carica fruit in adults: A randomized controlled trial.

Pak J Pharm Sci

January 2025

Department of Pathobiology and Biomedical Sciences, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture, Multan, Pakistan/Ali-Ul-Murtaza Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Muhammad Institute of Medical and Allied Sciences, Multan, Pakistan.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of vinegar-soaked Ficus carica fruits (VSFCF) for managing cholelithiasis in adults. A parallel-group, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial at Noreen Nishat Welfare Hospital, Khanewal, Pakistan, was conducted from December 2023 to February 2024. Fifty adults with ultrasound-confirmed cholelithiasis were randomly assigned to receive either VSFCF (1 g/kg/day) or ursodiol (600 mg/day).

Identification of phenols and their formation network during the brewing process of Shanxi aged vinegar.

Food Chem

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Industrial Fermentation Microbiology, Ministry of Education, School of Biological Engineering, Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Tianjin 300457, China. Electronic address:

Phenols are important functional compounds present in vineagr, however, their composition and formation pathways remain uncertain. Herein, non-targeted metabolomics and macrotranscriptomics methods were applied to identify phenols and analyze their formation network during the brewing process of Shanxi aged vinegar. A total of 82 phenols were detected from the raw material and the brewing process.

Rapid Determination of Organic and Inorganic Selenium in Poultry Tissues by Internal Extractive Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry.

Anal Chem

January 2025

The Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory for Diagnosis, Treatment, and Rehabilitation of cancer in Chinese Medicine, Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine, Nanchang 330004, P. R. China.

An online reactive internal extraction electrospray ionization (iEESI) method was developed for the rapid determination of organic and inorganic speciation information for selenium in poultry tissue samples without complex sample pretreatment. The addition of citric acid as a reducing agent to the internal extraction solvent of methanol/acetic acid (99:1, V/V) for iEESI resulted in the reduction of selenate in the sample to selenite, accompanied by the production of malic acid as an oxidation product. The quantitative analysis of selenate was conducted by using malic acid.
