Arthropods are declining globally, and entomologists ought to be in the forefront of protecting them. However, entomological study methods are typically lethal, and we argue that this makes the ethical status of the profession precarious. Lethal methods are used in most studies, even those that aim to support arthropod conservation. Additionally, almost all collecting methods result in bycatch, and a first step toward less destructive research practices is to minimize bycatch and/or ensure its proper storage and use. In this review, we describe the available suite of nonlethal methods with the aim of promoting their use. We classify nonlethal methods into () reuse of already collected material, () methods that are damaging but not lethal, () methods that modify behavior, and () true nonlethal methods. Artificial intelligence and miniaturization will help to extend the nonlethal methodological toolkit, but the need for further method development and testing remains.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a worldwide clinical burden associated with high morbidity and mortality. Remote ischemic preconditioning (rIPC), a brief nonlethal ischemia and reperfusion (IR) in remote tissues or limbs, has been used in an attempt to protect against AKI, but its underlying signaling pathways has not been elucidated. In the present study, rIPC protected kidney function and pathological injury and mitigated NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) upregulation in different AKI models (cisplatin, LPS and IRI).

Objective: Spina bifida is a group of anomalies that, while non-lethal, require careful prenatal evaluation and prognosis prediction due to their association with common motor and cognitive problems. In this study, we investigated the need for postnatal ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS) in fetuses with open spina bifida and explored the relationship between adverse perinatal outcomes and prenatal ultrasonographic findings.
Methods: In this retrospective study, fetuses with open spina bifida that were diagnosed prenatally and resulted in a live birth were examined.

Traditionally, lethal stomach dissection has been used to study the diets of sharks and rays, but conservation and animal welfare concerns necessitate non-lethal alternatives, such as gastric lavage (stomach or gut flushing). In this study, we summarised gastric lavage studies on elasmobranchs to identify which species/groups it has been effective for, the difficulties encountered and if post-release survival has been evaluated. Secondly, we used a field study to (1) demonstrate how to perform gastric lavage on juvenile rays, (2) assess its effectiveness and (3) verify post-release survival using mark-recapture techniques.

Carp edema virus (CEV), a member of the Poxviridae family, has been a significant pathogen in koi and common carp since its initial identification in Japan during the 1970s. CEV, the causative agent of Koi Sleepy Disease (KSD), can cause high mortality rates and has been reported in many countries and is often linked to the fish trade. The virus is typically detected through DNA analysis of gill tissues, where the highest viral loads are found.

Mercury (Hg) contamination affects all ecosystems worldwide. Its deleterious effects on wildlife and humans encompass a diversity of impacts from individual to population levels. In the present study, we quantified Hg concentration across various tissues (blood, brain, muscle, and toe) of green toads (Bufotes viridis) and investigated the use of toe clips as a proxy of Hg concentration in internal tissues, including the brain.
