"Doctor, I Want to Be Like This!": Exploring Global Beauty Body Standards Through a Multicenter Survey.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

January 2025

Academia de Chirurgia Plastica Mario Mendanha, Rua das Laranjeiras, Porto, Portugal.

Background: Plastic surgery aims to enhance patients' positive features and improve perceived flaws without seeking complete transformation. The body is a living organism, not a sculptural object to be reshaped at will. Aesthetic standards are influenced by subjective factors, including technology and social media's effect on self-perception and beauty ideals.

Nonlinear exposure-response associations of daytime, nighttime, and day-night compound heatwaves with mortality amid climate change.

Heatwaves are commonly simplified as binary variables in epidemiological studies, limiting the understanding of heatwave-mortality associations. Here we conduct a multi-country study across 28 East Asian cities that employed the Cumulative Excess Heatwave Index (CEHWI), which represents excess heat accumulation during heatwaves, to explore the potentially nonlinear associations of daytime-only, nighttime-only, and day-night compound heatwaves with mortality from 1981 to 2010. Populations exhibited high adaptability to daytime-only and nighttime-only heatwaves, with non-accidental mortality risks increasing only at higher CEHWI levels (75th-90th percentiles).

Bending the curve of biodiversity loss requires a 'satnav' for nature.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

January 2025

Biodiversity Futures Lab, Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, UK.

Georgina Mace proposed bending the curve of biodiversity loss as a fitting ambition for the Convention on Biological Diversity. The new Global Biodiversity Monitoring Framework (GBMF) may increase the chances of meeting the goals and targets in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which requires bending the curve. To meet the outcome goals of KMGBF, the GBMF should support adaptive policy responses to the state of biodiversity, which in turn requires a 'satnav' for nature.

Improving the performance of echo state networks through state feedback.

Wyant College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona, Tuscon, AZ, USA. Electronic address:

Reservoir computing, using nonlinear dynamical systems, offers a cost-effective alternative to neural networks for complex tasks involving processing of sequential data, time series modeling, and system identification. Echo state networks (ESNs), a type of reservoir computer, mirror neural networks but simplify training. They apply fixed, random linear transformations to the internal state, followed by nonlinear changes.

: Poxviruses are large DNA viruses that replicate in the host cytoplasm without a nuclear phase. As vaccine vectors, they can package and express large recombinant cassettes from different positions of their genomic core region. We present a comparison between wildtype modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) and isolate CR19, which has significantly expanded inverted terminal repeats (ITRs).
