is a saprophytic fungus commonly found in the environment. Able to be isolated from soil, it is frequently associated with the soft rot of wood. Although human infections are not common, they have been reported, and have ranged from keratitis and soft-tissue infection to deep osteomyelitis and endometritis. Here we report a case of soft-tissue infection with this pathogen along with successful treatment with standard-dose terbinafine when other agents were unavailable. The true prevalence of infections with this pathogen is unclear and further data are needed to determine optimal therapy.

High-velocity traumatic amputations of the proximal upper extremity are devastating to the patient and represent an extreme surgical challenge to the treatment team. The hand surgeon must simultaneously battle devascularization with timely microvascular anastomosis, gross contamination with meticulous debridement, and amputation with stable fixation. In restoring a functional extremity, many of these goals are in contention with each other.

is a ubiquitous organism classified as a nontuberculous mycobacterium that rarely causes indolent skin or soft-tissue infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Given the rarity of infection, diagnosis can be difficult because cutaneous lesions may be considered a worsening of the underlying disease or a benign condition. Here, we report a case of a rapidly progressing cutaneous infection in a patient with nephrotic syndrome.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMTs) represent a rare category of soft tissue tumors that are predominantly seen in individuals with compromised immune systems. Pathologically, EBV-SMT has malignant potential because of its unpredictable nature. These tumors can manifest at various anatomical sites or even multiple lesions in different locations.
