Published: September 2023

Spike sorting, a critical step in neural data processing, aims to classify spiking events from single electrode recordings based on different waveforms. This study aims to develop a novel online spike sorter, NeuSort, using neuromorphic models, with the ability to adaptively adjust to changes in neural signals, including waveform deformations and the appearance of new neurons.NeuSort leverages a neuromorphic model to emulate template-matching processes. This model incorporates plasticity learning mechanisms inspired by biological neural systems, facilitating real-time adjustments to online parameters.Experimental findings demonstrate NeuSort's ability to track neuron activities amidst waveform deformations and identify new neurons in real-time. NeuSort excels in handling non-stationary neural signals, significantly enhancing its applicability for long-term spike sorting tasks. Moreover, its implementation on neuromorphic chips guarantees ultra-low energy consumption during computation.NeuSort caters to the demand for real-time spike sorting in brain-machine interfaces through a neuromorphic approach. Its unsupervised, automated spike sorting process makes it a plug-and-play solution for online spike sorting.

High-density microelectrode arrays have opened new possibilities for systems neuroscience, but brain motion relative to the array poses challenges for downstream analyses. We introduce DREDge (Decentralized Registration of Electrophysiology Data), a robust algorithm for the registration of noisy, nonstationary extracellular electrophysiology recordings. In addition to estimating motion from action potential data, DREDge enables automated, high-temporal-resolution motion tracking in local field potential data.

Objective: Epilepsy is characterised by unprovoked and recurring seizures, which can be electrically measured using electroencephalograms (EEG). To better understand the underlying mechanisms of seizures, researchers are exploring their temporal dynamics through the lens of dynamical systems modelling. Seizure initiation and termination patterns of spiking amplitude and frequency can be sorted into "dynamotypes", which may be able to serve as biomarkers for intervention.

Spike sorting is a fundamental process for decoding neural activity, involving preprocessing, spike detection, feature extraction, clustering, and validation. However, conventional spike sorting methods are highly fragmented, labor-intensive, and heavily reliant on expert manual curation, limiting their scalability and reproducibility. This challenge has become more pressing with advances in neural recording technology, such as high-density Neuropixels for large-scale neural recording or flexible electrodes for long-term stable recording over months to years.

Background: The ongoing emergence of evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants poses great threaten to the efficacy of authorized monoclonal antibody-based passive immunization or treatments. Developing potent broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNabs) against SARS-CoV-2 and elucidating their potential evolutionary pathways are essential for battling the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: Broadly neutralizing antibodies were isolated using single cell sorting from three COVID-19 convalescents infected with prototype SARS-CoV-2 strain.

Unlabelled: Neurons derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are valuable models for studying brain development and developing therapies for brain disorders. Evaluating human-derived neurons requires assessing their electrical activity, which can be achieved using multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) for extracellular recordings. Because each electrode channel generally detects activity from multiple neurons, resolving the activity of single neurons requires a process called spike sorting.
