Article Abstract

Background: An increasing number of international patients continue to visit emergency departments (EDs) in Japanese hospitals. However, nurses in Japan perceive challenges when caring for patients from other countries. This study explored ED nurses' perceptions of barriers when caring for walk-in international patients.

Methods: Five semi-structured online focus group interviews involving 15 registered nurses with experience in caring for patients in an ED at a university referral hospital located in the center of Tokyo were conducted. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns from the interviews.

Results: The themes that emerged were as follows: (1) hesitation to engage with patients due to ambiguity, (2) loss of harmony in the ED, (3) difficulty with mutual goal settings, and (4) decreased professional self-efficacy.

Conclusion: The findings provide an understanding of the challenges faced when caring for walk-in international patients. Educational interventions for ED nurses and other strategies, such as the use of interpreters, can enhance nurses' abilities to improve patient safety and maintain equality.

Objective: Pathogenic variants in B-cell receptor-associated protein (BCAP31) are associated with X-linked, deafness, dystonia and cerebral hypomyelination (DDCH) syndrome. DDCH is congenital and non-progressive, featuring severe intellectual disability (ID), variable dysmorphism, and sometimes associated with shortened survival. BCAP31 encodes one of the most abundant chaperones, with several functions including acting as a negative regulator of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium ion (Ca) concentration.

Background: Industrywide, primary care nurses' work is increasing in complexity and team orientation. Mobile health information technologies (HITs) designed to aid nurses with indirect care tasks, including charting, have had mixed success. Failed introductions of HIT may be explained by insufficient integration into nurses' work processes, owing to an incomplete or incorrect understanding of the underlying work systems.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how infections from root canals can cause inflammation in the body and how tooth extractions or more root canal treatments affect that inflammation.
  • Researchers studied over 2,500 patients, measuring different inflammation-related molecules in their blood before and after dental treatments.
  • The results showed that tooth extraction and new root canal treatments helped lower some inflammation markers, and many patients reacted to the materials used in their previous root canal treatments.
