Background/aim: To investigate the association between the thyroid dysfunction and thyroid radiation dose in regional nodal irradiation (RNI) using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: We reviewed medical data of 67 patients with breast cancer who underwent curative surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, including RNI using VMAT, between 2018 and 2021. All patients had normal thyroid functional test results, including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, and free-T4. We defined subclinical hypothyroidism as increased TSH with or without decreased levels of free-T4 and T3 after the completion of VMAT. We calculated dose-volume histogram parameters (DVHPs), including the mean dose and relative thyroid volume receiving at least 10, 20, 30, and 40 Gy.

Results: The median follow-up time was 23.2 months. The 3-year locoregional failure-free survival, progression-free survival, and overall survival rates were 96.3%, 94.7%, and 96.2%, respectively. The mean thyroid dose was 21.4 Gy (range=11.5-29.4 Gy). Subclinical hypothyroidism was noted in 14 patients (20.9%) and the median time to the event was 4.1 months. Among the DVHPs, the relative volume receiving ≥20 Gy (V) was associated with subclinical hypothyroidism. The 2-year rates of subclinical hypothyroidism were 24.8% and 59.1% in patients with V ≤46.3% and >46.3%, respectively.

Conclusion: A significant proportion of patients with breast cancer developed subclinical hypothyroidism after undergoing VMAT for RNI. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the thyroid as an organ at risk for VMAT planning, and suggest that V could be a useful dose-volume constraint.

Little is known about the impact of environmental pollution on thyroid function in the non-occupationally exposed population of Kazakhstan. This study aimed to investigate serum levels of thyroxine (T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies in the environmentally exposed population of Kazakhstan in relation to symptoms of anxiety. A total of 1,388 nominally healthy individuals residing in areas exposed to three major types of environmental pollution prevalent in Kazakhstan-non-ferrous metallurgy, condensate gas extraction, and activities of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (SNTS)-were enrolled.

The primary objective of this study was to examine neurological disorders and cognitive impairments in patients with secondary hypothyroidism and epilepsy undergoing treatment with antiepileptic medications. The study included 184 patients divided into three groups: Group 1 (subclinical hypothyroidism, n = 60), Group 2 (manifest hypothyroidism, n = 64), and Group 3 (control, n = 60). Patients in Group 2 received levothyroxine therapy (initial dose of 25 μg/day, titrated to 50-100 μg/day), while Groups 1 and 2 were treated with anti-seizure medications (valproic acid, 40 mg/kg/day).

Problem: Hashimoto's disease is the commonest autoimmune disease of pregnancy. The presence of Anti-Thyroid antibodies (ATAs) alone [subclinical hypothyroidism] has also been shown to have adverse pregnancy effects. These can result in failure to conceive, recurrent miscarriages, anemia, preeclampsia, and abruption.

Background: The coexistence of primary glomerulonephritis and autoimmune thyroid disease has not been investigated.

Objective: This study aimed to assess thyroid morphology using sonography, determine the prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disorders, and evaluate thyroid function status in patients diagnosed with primary glomerulonephritis.

Materials And Methods: This single-center cross-sectional and observational study included 58 consecutive patients with primary glomerulonephritis and 58 healthy controls (HC).

Background: Subclinical vitamin D insufficiency is frequent in both developing and developed countries. Even after rickets was eliminated in the 1930s by fortifying milk, up to 1 billion people worldwide suffer from subclinical vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Numerous noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including depression, autoimmune illnesses, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease, are linked to this deficiency.
