Bacterial infections can significantly impair wound healing. Therefore, it is essential to develop wound dressings with high antimicrobial activity. Hydrogels are often used as wound dressings due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Herein, by cross linking sodium alginate (SA), agar (AG) with TiCT MXene and Zinc ions (Zn), a biosafe composite hydrogel (MSG-Zn) was developed for fast and efficient sterilization treatment. The excellent photothermal properties of TiCT MXene and the chemical antimicrobial activity of Zn enable synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT)/chemical therapy in NIR biowindow with reduced power density and improved antimicrobial efficiency. More importantly, the incorporation of Zn can enhance the effective contact between the hydrogel and bacteria, benefiting both photothermal and chemical antibacteria. In vitro antibacterial experiments showed that MSG-Zn has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli). Cellular experiments showed that the hydrogel had excellent biocompatibility and the released Zn stimulated cell migration. In addition, the prepared MSG-Zn hydrogel has other advantages such as hydrophilic, high swelling, simple and low cost preparation, which meets the requirements of an economical wound dressing. This proposed work shows that this composite hydrogel MSG-Zn has great potential for practical antimicrobial wound dressing applications.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control technique based on mass-rearing, radiation-based sterilization that can induce fitness costs, and releases of the pest species targeted for population control. Sterile matings, between females and sterilized males, can reduce the overall population growth rate and cause a fall in population density. However, a proportion of irradiated males may escape sterilization, resulting in what is called residual fertility.

In order to improve both resistance to lepidopteran pests and resistance to the herbicide imazethapyr in mainstay varieties of the Huang-Huai rice region, Sanming dominant genic male sterile (S-DGMS) rice was used as a platform to facilitate the pyramiding of functional genes and the replacement of the genomic background. Twelve novel lines were developed, each carrying a crystal toxin gene conferring resistance to lepidopteran pests and the allele conferring resistance to herbicide imazethapyr in the background of a mainstay variety. The genomic background of the 12 novel lines was examined using 48 specified molecular markers, and each line carried less than two polymorphic markers relative to the corresponding mainstay variety.

Background: In mammals, sperm fertilization potential relies on efficient progression within the female genital tract to reach and fertilize the oocyte. This fundamental property is supported by the flagellum, an evolutionarily conserved organelle, which contains dynein motor proteins that provide the mechanical force for sperm propulsion and motility. Primary motility of the sperm cells is acquired during their transit through the epididymis and hyperactivated motility is acquired throughout the journey in the female genital tract by a process called capacitation.

Genetic control - the deliberate introduction of genetic traits to control a pest or vector population - offers a powerful tool to augment conventional mosquito control tools that have been successful in reducing malaria burden but that are compromised by a range of operational challenges. Fungal contamination in the air of hospital wards can affect the health of medical staff, patients, and caregivers. Through systematic analysis of the concentration, types, and particle size distribution characteristics of fungi in the air of wards in Wuhan, China, in 2023, it was found that there was no significant correlation between the concentration of fungi in the air of wards and the disease type and personnel density. The main influencing factors were temperature, humidity, and seasonal changes.
