Purpose: In this study, we compared the effects of a single patient dialysis fluid delivery system (SPDDS) against a continuous dialysis fluid delivery system (CDDS) on inflammatory markers and endotoxemia in a population of patients receiving routine hemodialysis (HD) at Ain Shams University.

Materials And Methods: Eighty prevalent HD patients, ages 18 to 60, who were clinically stable and receiving thrice weekly dialysis treatments via an arteriovenous fistula were the subjects of a cross-sectional research. The study excluded patients with double lumen venous catheters used for hemodialysis, acute infections, cancer, and chronic liver disease.

Vascular Access for Renal Replacement Therapy in Neonates and Infants: A Single Center Experience.

J Pediatr Surg

January 2025

Children's of Alabama, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, Birmingham, AL, USA; University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Surgery, Birmingham, AL, USA.

Introduction: Neonatal renal replacement therapy (RRT) is a treatment modality used for severe kidney failure. Historically, its use has been limited in small infants due to circuits with large extra-corporeal volumes that require large double lumen vascular catheters. We sought to review our institution's experience with vascular access and overall survival in infants who receive RRT.

A chronic intermittent haemodialysis pig model for functional evaluation of dialysis membranes.

Int J Artif Organs

May 2024

M&M Collaboration Research Laboratory, Department of Medical Environment Innovation, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan.

Performance evaluation of new dialysis membranes is primarily performed in vitro, which can lead to differences in clinical results. Currently, data on dialysis membrane performance and safety are available only for haemodialysis patients. Herein, we aimed to establish an in vivo animal model of dialysis that could be extrapolated to humans.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the effectiveness of a "rapid intervention team" (RIT) strategy for addressing dysfunction in arteriovenous shunts among hemodialysis patients, aiming for early intervention to enhance outcomes.
  • A total of 1054 patients were analyzed, with those in the RIT group experiencing significantly shorter times to intervention and lower rates of needing temporary dialysis catheters or shunt recreations compared to the control group.
  • The cumulative survival rate between the two groups was similar; thus, while the RIT strategy improved certain care aspects, it did not significantly impact overall mortality.
