Assisted living facility (ALF) residents are at greater risk of declining health and death from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to advanced age, frailty, chronic conditions, and transmission prevention methods. One method, room quarantine, can lead to isolation and potential weight changes. Continuous room quarantine was mandated by the state for all nursing home and ALF residents. The objective of the current study was to determine the degree and significance of weight loss during quarantine through retrospective chart review and use these findings to guide a quality improvement project. Pre-and post-COVID-19 weights were compared for 53 house call program residents. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used. This small convenience sample demonstrated significant weight loss for 40% of ALF residents quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic. Males showed a greater risk of significant weight loss. Weight loss of 5% in 1 month is considered problematic in older adults. As quarantine measures continue to be used for COVID-19 outbreaks, weight changes, particularly among males, need to be monitored and reported for intervention. [(9), 29-34.].

Background: An increasing number of childbearing-aged women have undergone bariatric surgery (BS). Although pregnancy outcomes generally improve after BS, concern remains over the impact of rapid weight loss and the catabolic state that occurs soon after BS. At least a 12-month surgery-to-conception time (SCT) is recommended, though the reasoning behind this has been questioned.

Background: Fresh vegetables are commodities that have a high tendency to deteriorate after harvest, causing significant losses in economic and environmental costs associated with plant food loss. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of both un-irradiated (UISA) and irradiated sodium alginate (ISA) as an edible coating for preserving cherry tomato fruits under storage conditions. The FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and TEM were used to characterize the UISA and ISA (25, 50, 75, and 100 kGy), which demonstrated that the alginate polymer was degraded and low molecular-weight polysaccharides were formed as a result of irradiation, particularly with the 100 kGy dose level.

Objective: Mechanisms underlying metabolic improvement following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) may provide insight into novel therapies. Vasopressin improves body composition and protects against hypoglycemia. Associations of copeptin, a stable cleavage product of vasopressin, with BMI and insulin resistance suggest an adaptive increase in vasopressin to counteract metabolic disruption.

Introduction: Although DNA methylation has been suggested to be a potential predictor of the progression of obesity and obesity-related diseases, little is known about its potential role as predictive marker of successful weight loss after bariatric surgery.
Material And Methods: 20 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy were classified according to the percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) 1 year after bariatric surgery, using 60% as the cut-off point. Blood DNA methylation was analyzed prior to surgery using the Infinium Methylation EPIC Bead Chip array-based platform.

Objectives: To investigate the effects of asperosaponin VI (AVI) on intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis and intestinal barrier function in a mouse model of Crohn's disease (CD)-like colitis and explore its mechanisms.
Methods: Male C57BL/6 mice with TNBS-induced CD-like colitis were treated with saline or AVI (daily dose 150 mg/kg) by gavage for 6 days. The changes in body weight, colon length, DAI scores, and colon pathologies of the mice were observed, and the expressions of inflammatory factors and tight injunction proteins were detected using ELISA and RT-qPCR.
